Senior Staff Software Engineer, Browser New Products (Remote in Canada)

Develop experimental browser capabilities at Mozilla, an open-source internet technology company. Focus on browser engine internals, performance, correctness, and interactions with AI agents.

Description

  • Design and build experiments across browser engine subsystems
  • Analyze how internal data structures and execution behavior influence performance, correctness, and developer-tool interfaces
  • Assess efficient, accurate ways to represent and expose browser state
  • Prototype engine capabilities that enable reliable programmatic interaction with web content
  • Study how document structure, layout, navigation, and event handling influence correctness and performance
  • Instrument browser behavior and assess changes using repeatable tasks
  • Measure performance and correctness, isolate change impacts, and record both successful and unsuccessful experiments
  • Confirm that improvements extend beyond prototype-development workloads
  • Profile overhead from new capabilities and pursue improvements supported by measurement
  • Use AI tools to speed coding and analysis, validating results through debugging, testing, and measurement
  • Partner closely with the technical lead as a hands-on individual contributor

Requirements

  • Deep practical expertise in at least one browser engine area, including DOM and Web APIs, layout and rendering, accessibility, JavaScript runtimes, or networking and process architecture
  • Strong command of C++ or Rust
  • Experience working within a large systems codebase
  • Working knowledge of memory ownership, concurrency, object lifetimes, and performance debugging
  • Ability to create JavaScript and scripting tools for exercising and measuring implementations
  • Ability to explore unfamiliar code, develop precise hypotheses, build useful prototypes, and interpret findings
  • Strong understanding of web platform behavior and compatibility
  • Experience with profiling, tracing, regression testing, or conformance testing
  • Curiosity about AI agents and readiness to work directly with agent harnesses and coding tools
  • Contributions to Gecko, Servo, Blink, WebKit, or another browser engine are desirable
  • Experience maintaining an open-source project is desirable
  • Technical leadership on a small team developing a new product is desirable
  • Experience with accessibility infrastructure, browser security, profiling, or automated evaluation of agent workflows is desirable
