Senior Staff Embedded Software Engineer, Long Beach Hybrid

Lead embedded firmware development for Ford’s electric vehicles in a senior staff role. Design and validate safety-critical, low-power multicore systems for energy management and powertrain controls.

Description

  • Lead firmware design and implementation for distributed embedded systems with multiple microcontrollers, with emphasis on safety and power efficiency
  • Specify, develop, and test bare-metal and RTOS low-level software for energy management and powertrain control systems
  • Build embedded software spanning foundational low-level layers through application modules
  • Define interfaces between application software and embedded firmware
  • Architect multicore software for timing-critical systems
  • Clarify ambiguous requirements, specifications, and design decisions
  • Develop efficient real-time software components and interfaces
  • Create software component testing methods and implementations that support maturity, stability, and release readiness
  • Use bench hardware and debuggers, including HIL environments, to verify software behavior
  • Develop software in compliance with ISO 26262
  • Establish system-level power requirements and implement microcontroller low-power operating modes
  • Instrument and profile software to uncover optimization opportunities at both submodule and system levels
  • Conduct hardware validation and labcar testing
  • Build automation frameworks for unit, SIL, and HIL testing
  • Create thorough test plans and evaluate firmware functionality, stability, and performance across varied conditions, including low-power modes

Requirements

  • Experience with hands-on hardware bring-up, system debugging, and code optimization
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and explain complex technical concepts
  • Ability to produce high-quality C code for real-time embedded systems
  • Proficiency designing embedded architectures from bare metal through RTOS implementations
  • Deep knowledge of modern multicore 32-bit embedded controller architecture and peripherals
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and software build infrastructure
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering; demonstrated exceptional ability or equivalent experience may also qualify
  • At least 8 years of relevant embedded design experience
  • Advanced proficiency in Embedded C
  • Experience using JIRA, Confluence, or comparable tools to track inputs and results
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals, including circuit analysis and design
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Experience developing low-level drivers and integrating RTOS platforms
  • Experience with build tools such as Bazel, SCons, and CMake
  • Experience analyzing fundamental PCB hardware components with appropriate tools
  • Ability to write testing scripts in Python
  • Strong foundation in software design and maintainable development practices
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
