Senior Geomechanics Engineer — Toronto Hybrid

Support mining clients with geotechnical assessments, numerical modeling, and practical engineering recommendations. Join ITASCA’s employee-owned North American consulting team.

Description

  • Combine geotechnical, geological, structural, monitoring, mine-planning, and site-observation data in engineering assessments
  • Assess open-pit and underground stability, ground control, stress redistribution, excavation response, and associated risks
  • Build and interpret numerical models for mining geomechanics projects
  • Explain analytical assumptions, uncertainty, limitations, and practical consequences clearly
  • Develop actionable technical recommendations for clients
  • Work with ITASCA engineers across North America and international teams
  • Coach junior engineers in interpretation, modeling methods, and technical communication
  • Support proposals, client relationships, and the expansion of ITASCA North America’s geomechanics practice
  • Take part in client meetings, site visits, conferences, business development, and internal collaboration

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining, geological, geotechnical, or civil engineering, rock mechanics, geomechanics, or a related discipline
  • At least 8 years of experience in mining geomechanics, rock mechanics, or related geotechnical consulting
  • Strong knowledge of rock-mass characterization and behavior, excavation and slope stability, and ground control
  • Proven ability to develop, run, and interpret numerical models for geomechanical applications
  • Ability to convert modeling outputs into practical engineering recommendations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to independently manage technical work and deliver high-quality results within schedule and budget
  • Professional Engineer designation, such as P.Eng., PE, or equivalent, or eligibility for registration
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Mine-site or operational experience in open-pit and/or underground mining strongly valued
  • Experience combining field observations, monitoring data, geology, mine-planning information, and numerical-model results
  • Experience using ITASCA software, including FLAC3D, 3DEC, or UDEC
  • Experience presenting technical conclusions to clients or mine operations teams
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading technical assignments
  • Willingness to travel for client meetings, site visits, conferences, business development, and internal collaboration
