Senior Engineering Lead, Payments Platform (Hybrid)

Lead the design and engineering of resilient, AI-enabled payments infrastructure for Citi. This senior role covers microservices, real-time transaction processing, compliance, and technical leadership.

Description

  • Lead cross-functional integration, deliver new payments products and capabilities, and improve payment processing workflows
  • Evaluate complex business and system processes alongside payments industry standards to define effective solutions
  • Provide advanced application programming expertise and oversee assignments involving significant budgets, cross-functional initiatives, or multiple projects
  • Establish methodologies and standards for program analysis, design, coding, testing, debugging, and implementation
  • Apply advanced knowledge of system flows and multiple technology domains to achieve payments platform objectives
  • Work with payments product owners and business stakeholders to define system specifications and incorporate them into system designs
  • Assign work and mentor or coach developers, analysts, and new team members
  • Influence and negotiate with senior leaders while communicating with external stakeholders
  • Manage risk, compliance, controls, and the protection of Citigroup, its clients, and assets
  • Build fault-tolerant, loosely coupled microservices with circuit breakers, bulkheads, and active-active replication to support 99.99% availability
  • Integrate AI and machine learning models for predictive scaling, anomaly detection, and automated self-healing
  • Develop high-throughput, event-driven architectures using technologies such as Apache Kafka for real-time payment and transaction processing
  • Ensure platform architecture and engineering practices address PCI-DSS, AML/KYC transaction monitoring, and payment scheme compliance

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of hands-on software engineering experience
  • Demonstrated individual technical contribution to enterprise-grade payments or financial transaction processing systems
  • Subject matter expertise in application development with Java technologies, including Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and reactive programming frameworks
  • Proficiency in Java and Python
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining enterprise-scale payments platforms across complex distributed systems
  • Experience designing and implementing resilient microservices architectures with circuit breakers, bulkheads, and active-active replication
  • Experience with event-driven and message-based architectures using Apache Kafka or comparable platforms
  • Working knowledge of payment rails, messaging standards, and protocols including ISO 20022, SWIFT, ACH, RTP, and wire transfers
  • Understanding of the payments processing lifecycle, including authorization, clearing, settlement, and reconciliation
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, and GitHub Actions
  • Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Oracle, or Redis
  • Experience using artificial intelligence tools and technologies such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Devin
  • Experience implementing monitoring and observability with Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, or Splunk
  • Strong systems analysis capabilities
  • Familiarity with payments industry regulations and standards is advantageous
  • Ability to build relationships and consensus across payments product, risk, compliance, and operations stakeholders
  • Bachelor's or university degree, or equivalent experience
  • Master's degree preferred
