Senior Controls Engineer – Advanced Manufacturing (Remote)

Lead PLC, robotics, safety, and industrial automation initiatives for Wabtec Corporation. Help standardize secure, reliable manufacturing controls across global production sites.

Description

  • Collaborate with operations, product engineering, maintenance, quality, procurement, IT, OT, EHS, and business leadership.
  • Design, deploy, secure, and maintain controls systems throughout the global supply chain.
  • Define controls architectures and provide direction on technical decisions.
  • Create standards that keep automation systems safe, maintainable, scalable, and ready for production.
  • Lead controls architecture, design, programming, integration, commissioning, and optimization activities.
  • Develop controls concepts and detailed specifications.
  • Conduct technical reviews and contribute to capital project delivery.
  • Investigate and resolve complex controls and automation issues.
  • Standardize proven controls solutions and replicate them across manufacturing facilities.
  • Direct controls projects from initial concept and architecture through production launch.
  • Program, review, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, motion, safety, and industrial communications applications.
  • Confirm compliance with technical, safety, maintainability, and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Prepare capital estimates, controls scopes, test plans, and technical RFQ requirements.
  • Assist with supplier selection, panel and software reviews, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup.
  • Diagnose controls, network, motion, robotics interface, and manufacturing data problems.
  • Improve systems for reliability, cycle time, diagnostics, maintainability, and production results.
  • Contribute to the Automation & Advanced Manufacturing roadmap, governance, and technology strategy.
  • Assess emerging controls, connectivity, simulation, and AI-enabled manufacturing technologies.
  • Mentor site controls personnel and provide senior technical guidance during project delivery and issue resolution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, controls, automation, mechatronics, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • At least seven years of experience in industrial controls, automation, systems integration, or advanced manufacturing.
  • Proven experience leading substantial controls and capital automation projects.
  • Advanced PLC and HMI programming expertise.
  • Strong command of structured software development practices.
  • Solid knowledge of machine safety, motion control, robotics integration, industrial networks, instrumentation, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience creating controls architectures, functional specifications, standards, test plans, and commissioning documentation.
  • Capability in project leadership, technical mentoring, systematic troubleshooting, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Willingness to travel as needed to support manufacturing sites across the enterprise.
  • Preferred experience with Rockwell Automation ControlLogix or CompactLogix, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, or comparable platforms.
  • Preferred experience with Siemens TIA Portal, S7 PLCs, WinCC, or other leading industrial controls platforms.
  • Preferred knowledge of EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, OPC UA, and managed switching.
  • Preferred experience with machine-safety PLCs, safety relays, risk-reduction functions, and validation support.
  • Preferred experience with servo systems, variable-frequency drives, coordinated motion, and precision process control.
  • Preferred experience integrating industrial robots, machine vision, automated material handling, and production equipment.
  • Preferred experience with MES, SCADA, historians, OEE, databases, and manufacturing data collection systems.
  • Preferred experience supporting FAT, SAT, commissioning, production launches, and lifecycle operations.
  • Preferred Lean, Six Sigma, functional safety, networking, or controls-platform certification.
