Principal Software Systems Engineer - Luton Onsite

Lead software systems engineering for Leonardo’s aerospace, defence, and security products in Luton. The role covers architecture, integration, testing, and mission tools for self-protection and next-generation aircraft systems.

Description

  • Define requirements for new systems and software solutions with stakeholders
  • Create architectural designs for software systems
  • Assess proposed solutions through cost and functional-performance trade-offs
  • Improve the capabilities and performance of systems already in service
  • Design and integrate new functionality with existing and external software systems
  • Plan and execute testing and trials to demonstrate equipment functionality and performance
  • Investigate operational, integration, and evaluation issues through root-cause analysis
  • Lead technical workstreams and engineering initiatives
  • Guide and develop fellow engineers through mentoring and coaching
  • Prepare and present technical reports, proposals, and briefings for customers and industry partners
  • Promote knowledge sharing and the application of software and systems engineering best practices
  • Develop and integrate software for aerospace products, including mission-planning and analysis tools for self-protection systems and Tempest/GCAP technologies

Requirements

  • Degree in science, mathematics, or engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated delivery of software-intensive systems, preferably for regulated sectors such as defence, rail, or other safety-critical environments
  • Experience collaborating with software teams that use DevOps practices to deliver products
  • Experience applying model-based systems engineering methods or modelling languages such as UML
  • Understanding of software technologies, architectures, design principles, and testing practices
  • Experience with functional architectures, development lifecycles, and associated toolsets
  • Knowledge of the systems engineering lifecycle, including problem definition, systems and software architecture, development and qualification, integration, verification, and validation
  • Ability to satisfy UK Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard pre-employment screening
  • May be required to satisfy eligibility criteria for Security Check or Developed Vetting clearance
