Nurse Extern (PRN) - Kalamazoo, MI

Provide supervised patient care with RN preceptors across Bronson Healthcare hospitals in a PRN nursing extern role. Support assessments, medications, care planning, patient education, and clinical rotations.

Description

  • Implement patient care with an RN under general supervision and established organizational policies
  • Discuss learning needs with the nurse preceptor and pursue varied clinical experiences
  • Prioritize assignments, meet deadlines, and support patient outcomes under RN guidance
  • Apply the nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Coordinate care from professional and unlicensed team members, including appropriate delegation and coaching
  • Deliver approved physical care within the defined scope of practice
  • Record and communicate patient responses, resource use, and anticipated care needs
  • Document nursing histories and patients’ physical and emotional needs
  • Create and maintain care plans for assigned patients
  • Measure vital signs and evaluate patient conditions
  • Monitor patients, record changes and reactions, provide interventions, and notify supervisors or physicians when appropriate
  • Give prescribed medications and treatments using approved techniques and policies
  • Explain procedures and treatments clearly to patients
  • Prepare equipment and support physicians during examinations and treatments
  • Promote patient comfort and maintain a safe care environment
  • Begin and support patient education plans
  • Respond appropriately during life-threatening situations
  • Coordinate discharge planning and preparation
  • Rotate through clinical services and ready rooms, instruments, equipment, and supplies for procedures
  • Contribute to performance improvement initiatives and professional development
  • Help maintain a positive workplace and collaborative team environment
  • May provide clinical guidance and model effective practice for Unit Clerks, USAs, PCAs, and LPNs

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required
  • Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program is required
  • Must be within one year of graduation and expect to graduate in Spring 2027 or Winter 2027
  • Must complete hospital, core, and department-specific orientation requirements
  • BLS certification is required
  • Must successfully complete a pharmacology course or pass a pharmacology medication assessment
  • Able to read, interpret, and analyze information from multiple computer systems and equipment
  • Able to communicate clearly and compassionately in both spoken and written forms
  • Able to work variable 12-hour shifts, including at least four shifts each month
  • Able to stand, walk, lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds, and assist with lifting and repositioning patients
