Thermulon
Thermulon
Thermulon develops aerogel materials for advanced insulation applications in construction and electric vehicle batteries. As a chemical manufacturing company working across manufacturing, construction, and energy, it focuses on making aerogels faster and more affordably through streamlined production methods. Its materials are available as powders and granules for use in insulating batts, blankets, and panels, combining very low density with strong thermal insulation and fire-performance properties.

Lead Process Engineer – London Hybrid

Lead process engineering for Thermulon’s aerogel insulation manufacturing scale-up and first commercial plant. Oversee process safety, technical delivery, techno-economic analysis and commissioning across UK and European sites.

Description

  • Own process engineering for Thermulon’s capital projects, including toll-manufacturing scale-up and the first commercial-scale plant
  • Convert strategic priorities, capital milestones and Big5 targets into a 12–18 month process engineering roadmap
  • Serve as the principal process engineer across capital projects while remaining hands-on in delivery
  • Use process safety expertise to lead HAZIDs, HAZOPs and action closeout
  • Supervise, mentor and assure the quality of work produced by the process engineering team
  • Create practical solutions to delivery challenges using process technology, engineering standards and technical literature
  • Own PFDs, P&IDs, mass and energy balances, equipment user specifications, technical bid evaluations, FAT/SAT testing and commissioning plans
  • Produce technical materials for partners, vendors and grant bodies, while contributing to process IP and patent proposals
  • Maintain technical project risk and management-of-change registers and drive actions through to closure
  • Approve and carry out due diligence on techno-economic analyses for process plants
  • Coordinate technical communication across Process Engineering, R&D, Commercial and Operations
  • Work with project delivery partners and external process consultants, converting their input into project decisions
  • Engage with partners and customers in a technical capacity when required
  • Support and supervise equipment proposals, designs and vendor validation activities
  • Take part directly in trial campaigns when required

Requirements

  • Demonstrate Thermulon’s values: Safe, Collaborate, Impact, Pace, Innovate and Grow
  • Bring a creative, practical approach to solving problems when standard methods are unavailable
  • Work effectively in conditions of substantial uncertainty
  • Show consistent drive to deliver day-to-day work while staying close to the detail
  • Apply diligence and care to the integrity of models and data
  • Mentor others and develop their technical capability
  • Build relationships and drive action across engineers, scientists and external partners through influence rather than authority
  • Operate independently within a small, lean organisation
  • Be willing and available to travel to UK and/or European sites during construction, commissioning and operation
  • Have significant hands-on chemical process experience spanning capital delivery, technology transfer and process scale-up
  • Show a proven record across the listed key accountabilities
  • Use strong influencing skills without relying on line-management authority
  • Hold a degree in Chemical or Process Engineering
  • Be mobile and interested in working at different sites during scale-up, commissioning and early production
  • Chartered Engineer status through IChemE or an equivalent body is desirable
  • Experience with HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, risk management and change management is desirable
  • Formal training in techno-economic analysis is desirable
  • Experience running equipment trials or pilot campaigns with third-party vendors is desirable
  • Experience scaling an immature or novel chemical process is desirable
  • Experience supervising or technically line-managing junior or graduate engineers is desirable
  • Experience managing a process development or engineering budget is desirable
  • Proven experience leading a process engineering team is desirable
