Director of Software Engineering, Hybrid - United States

Lead software engineering strategy, AI adoption, healthcare interoperability, and scalable platform delivery at Avalon Healthcare Solutions. Guide distributed teams and cross-functional initiatives supporting diagnostic intelligence solutions.

Description

  • Lead development and delivery for existing platforms and new solutions within a scaled Agile Scrum organization
  • Direct Avalon Healthcare Solutions’ AI adoption and implementation
  • Validate technical approaches through hands-on proofs of concept before broader team adoption
  • Provide technology leadership and act as a strategic thought partner across Avalon
  • Design, develop, manage, and implement enterprise information systems and proprietary software applications
  • Help define the company’s technology roadmap
  • Serve as a technology subject-matter expert for internal stakeholders, current customers, and prospective clients
  • Develop and mentor direct reports while strengthening engagement across Software Engineering
  • Create prototypes, technical spikes, and AI-assisted proofs of concept
  • Partner with Product, Operations, Client Success, Data, and Compliance leaders to align priorities and deliver cross-functional results
  • Select and manage third-party partners and vendors
  • Lead geographically distributed teams, including offshore contractors
  • Oversee the software development budget

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience in IT applications design and development
  • At least 5 years of experience in IT management or leadership
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a master’s degree, or significant equivalent relevant experience
  • Required AWS knowledge, including hands-on familiarity with core services, deployment models, and security posture
  • Demonstrated experience integrating AI into engineering workflows, including evaluation, guardrails, and impact measurement
  • Ability to independently develop prototypes and proofs of concept
  • Previous healthcare industry experience
  • Experience developing healthcare interoperability solutions with HL7, EDI, and FHIR
  • Extensive experience leading Agile Scrum teams
  • Extensive experience with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and manage third-party partners and vendors
  • Ability to lead geographically distributed teams, including offshore contractors
  • Strong understanding of software development processes and development metrics
  • Experience using JIRA to manage work-item pipelines
  • Commitment to continuous improvement
  • Ability to manage a software development budget
  • Experience with AWS, Java, Linux, JavaScript/TypeScript, Liferay, and SQL Server environments
