Director of Software Engineering - Hybrid Tampa, FL

Lead software engineering strategy, AI adoption, healthcare interoperability, and agile delivery at Avalon Healthcare Solutions. Oversee engineering teams, platforms, vendors, budgets, and the technology roadmap.

Description

  • Drive high-quality development and delivery across existing platforms and new solutions in a scaled agile Scrum environment
  • Lead Avalon’s AI adoption and implementation efforts
  • Remain hands-on with proofs of concept to validate technical approaches before broader team adoption
  • Provide technology leadership and serve as a strategic thought partner across Avalon
  • Design, develop, manage, and implement organizational information systems and proprietary software applications
  • Define and execute the company’s technology roadmap
  • Serve as a technology subject-matter expert for internal stakeholders, current customers, and prospective clients
  • Develop and mentor direct reports while strengthening engagement across Software Engineering
  • Create prototypes, technical spikes, and AI-assisted proofs of concept to reduce decision risk
  • Partner with Product, Operations, Client Success, Data, and Compliance leaders to align priorities and deliver cross-functional results
  • Lead geographically distributed teams, including offshore contractors
  • Oversee the development budget

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of overall IT experience in application design and development
  • At least 5 years of experience in IT management or leadership
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a master’s degree, or substantial equivalent relevant experience
  • Required AWS knowledge, including hands-on familiarity with core services, deployment models, and security posture
  • Demonstrated success introducing AI into engineering workflows, including evaluation, guardrails, and impact measurement
  • Ability to independently develop proofs of concept and prototypes
  • Prior healthcare industry experience is required
  • Experience developing healthcare interoperability solutions with HL7, EDI, and FHIR
  • Extensive experience leading Agile Scrum teams
  • Extensive experience with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
  • Expertise managing relationships with third-party partners and vendors
  • Ability to lead geographically distributed teams, including offshore contractors
  • Strong understanding of software development processes and performance metrics
  • Experience using JIRA to manage work-item pipelines
  • Commitment to continuous improvement
  • Experience managing software development budgets
  • Preferred: experience leading an Agile and SAFe transformation
  • Preferred: proven experience in an early-stage, private equity-backed company
  • Preferred: hands-on AWS and AI experience in a regulated environment
