Database Engineering Manager – Chemist Warehouse, Preston (Hybrid)

Lead enterprise database platforms, pipelines, and services for Chemist Warehouse. Shape secure, scalable data capabilities across cloud and on-premises environments.

Description

  • Lead the design, implementation, and operation of enterprise database and data platforms across cloud and on-premises environments
  • Maintain the availability, performance, security, and reliability of production database services
  • Define and uphold technical standards, engineering practices, and operational processes
  • Advance automation, DevOps, and modern software engineering practices
  • Plan workloads, projects, and resources against operational and strategic priorities
  • Help shape technology roadmaps and connect database initiatives to organisational goals
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Database Engineering team
  • Set objectives, KPIs, and development plans while contributing to performance management
  • Partner with People and Culture to recruit, develop, and retain team members
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team environment
  • Oversee the departmental budget where applicable
  • Encourage continuous improvement, accountability, and knowledge sharing
  • Report to the Head of Infrastructure

Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • At least eight years of experience in data or database engineering
  • Five or more years of experience in leadership or mentoring roles
  • Demonstrated success leading, coaching, and developing high-performing database or data engineering teams
  • Ability to set direction, establish priorities, and align team outcomes with business objectives
  • Strong stakeholder influence and cross-functional collaboration skills across technology and business teams
  • Deep knowledge of data engineering principles, ETL/ELT processes, and enterprise data solution design
  • Extensive experience with enterprise data platforms, including on-premises databases and cloud data warehouses
  • Strong planning, prioritisation, and time management abilities
  • Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and written and verbal communication skills
