Controls Engineer, PLC Estimator — Remote in Idaho
Remote controls engineering and estimating role focused on turnkey PLC/HMI integration and industrial electrical projects. The work includes developing control architectures and supporting automation modernization for Shermco clients.
Description
- Partner with industrial clients to understand operational needs and shape suitable control system architectures
- Build detailed estimates for turnkey integration work spanning engineering, panel fabrication, HMI setup, PLC programming, installation, and commissioning
- Analyze proposal specifications and drawings to price industrial electrical projects
- Prepare estimates for both new construction and retrofit work
- Spot opportunities to upgrade aging industrial systems, including migrations from legacy Allen-Bradley PLC-5 platforms
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and visit job sites to validate take-offs
- Produce project takeoffs, submittals, and proposals
- Obtain supplier pricing for equipment and materials, including PLC and HMI hardware and software
- Submit client-required documentation within established deadlines
- Define estimate inclusions, exclusions, and clarifications
- Address customer needs, expectations, and project requirements
- Coordinate with employees, vendors, clients, and other stakeholders
- Keep estimate backup documentation and supplier pricing records current
- Assist colleagues with estimating work in other disciplines
- Handle additional duties assigned by the supervisor
Requirements
- At least five years of experience in the industrial electrical industry
- At least two years of construction estimating experience
- Journeyman Electrician license preferred
- Thorough knowledge of electrical systems, codes, and standards
- Strong working knowledge of PLC platforms and industrial networks
- Ability to design and specify complete PLC/HMI hardware and software solutions from limited customer information
- Automation and controls experience involving PLCs, instrumentation, valves, mechanical control panels, and electrical control panels is a plus
- Familiarity with NECA rates and structures
- Familiarity with NEC/NFPA-70E
- Knowledge of material quoting, RFQs, and vendor procedures
- Ability to resolve or escalate specification conflicts and drawing inaccuracies
- Familiarity with estimating and installing electrical raceway, including cable tray, EMT, rigid, IMC, and plastibond
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and automation construction drawings, wiring details, installation details, P&IDs, layout drawings, panel drawings, and BOMs
- Ability to interpret complex construction specifications covering electrical, automation, and control-related mechanical means and methods
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT, Adobe Acrobat or Bluebeam, and advanced or expert Accubid
- Fluent spoken and written English
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work with customers, contractors, owners, and specialty equipment suppliers to establish scopes and required materials or equipment
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities amid changing priorities
- Self-directed, proactive, and effective as part of a remote team
