Backend Engineer II, Data Platform – Spotify (Hybrid, Sweden)
Build Spotify’s data catalog, lineage, and metadata platform as a Backend Engineer II. Develop reliable Java services and batch or streaming pipelines that support critical data infrastructure.
Description
- Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs for data catalog, lineage, and publishing systems
- Adapt platform systems to new storage technologies and data assets
- Develop and operate batch and streaming pipelines that keep metadata current
- Process platform events and audit logs to track how data is created and changed
- Turn lineage and metadata into data products for internal teams
- Translate platform-user needs into technical designs and lead delivery and rollout
- Remain accountable for project outcomes after production launch
- Participate in on-call rotations for critical services
- Build observability and quality checks into platform development
- Apply automation, including AI tools, to reduce operational toil
- Establish internal standards for naming, storage, and metadata
- Advance data management standards and supporting systems
Requirements
- Proven experience building and operating production backend services and APIs with Java
- Strong attention to API design, versioning, and backward compatibility
- Comfortable working with SQL
- Experience with data pipelines or cloud data warehouses such as BigQuery, Snowflake, or Databricks
- Working knowledge of orchestration, metadata management, data quality, governance, and lineage
- Ability to divide complex problems into clear, deliverable steps while evaluating tradeoffs and risks
- Accountability for the quality of shipped code, including code produced with AI assistance
- Strong communication and collaboration abilities
- Comfort working in a fast-moving platform environment
- Hands-on experience with batch or streaming frameworks such as Beam, Flink, or Spark is a plus
