Associate Principal Structural Engineer, Bridges, Austin, Texas

Lead bridge investigations, design, rehabilitation, and civil infrastructure projects as an Associate Principal at WJE. The role combines client leadership, project management, fieldwork, and technical direction.

Description

  • Lead structural investigations, diagnostics, design, and rehabilitation for existing bridges and critical infrastructure
  • Direct project delivery, including scoping, team formation, schedules, budgets, financial management, client expectations, and deliverables
  • Use sound engineering judgment grounded in applicable codes, design guidance, and industry practice
  • Provide structural and bridge engineering expertise on interdisciplinary teams
  • Investigate, analyze, design, repair, and renovate bridges and complex civil structures
  • Produce high-quality technical deliverables for clients
  • Review and supervise the work of other professionals
  • Conduct field investigations and train colleagues in field practices
  • Mentor structural and bridge engineers while supporting their professional growth
  • Build client relationships and develop new project opportunities
  • Work with practice leaders on knowledge-sharing and training programs
  • Engage with industry groups, conferences, and technical committees

Requirements

  • Texas Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, or the ability to obtain it through comity
  • Structural Engineer (SE) licensure is advantageous
  • Advanced degree in civil or structural engineering, or a related discipline; substantial relevant expertise may substitute for a master's or doctoral degree
  • At least 15 years of relevant structural engineering experience
  • Background in technical leadership and project management
  • Experience analyzing and designing repairs, retrofits, and rehabilitation for existing bridges or other civil infrastructure
  • Experience with new structural design, failure or damage investigations, and asset condition assessments
  • Proven ability to develop business and maintain client relationships
  • Established regional professional network, including collaboration with state transportation departments such as TxDOT
  • Strong technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication abilities
  • Willingness to travel and attend meetings at offices, field locations, and construction sites
  • Ability to inspect buildings and other structures using visual methods and instruments
  • Ability to work safely at heights, in confined spaces, and in hazardous environments
  • Safe operation of ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and similar access equipment
  • Ability to lift and carry materials, tools, and heavy equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Medical fitness to use respiratory protection and other required personal protective equipment
  • Ability to drive and operate a motor vehicle safely
  • National Highway Institute (NHI) bridge inspection certifications are preferred
  • Bridge Design precertification with state transportation departments is preferred
