- Confirm legal terminology and procedural details are accurate
- Verify facts and supporting information
- Review headlines, leads, and article copy
- Apply house style consistently across the service
- Check legal citations and case information
- Prevent substantive errors during editing
- Flag missing information and unclear passages
- Maintain a neutral, appropriate legal-news tone
- Complete final publication-quality reviews
- Manage work in a deadline-driven news operation and meet all deadlines
- Support consistent editorial standards across the service
- Gather news and write manager-guided articles explaining court opinions and other litigation-related documents
- Track assigned-topic developments and report on legal news
Requirements
- Experience copyediting hard news with strong editorial judgment
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications, or relevant professional experience
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and reprioritize throughout the day
- Ability to understand and explain complex legal subjects
- Strong, efficient copyediting and news-writing skills
- Availability to work Eastern Time Zone hours
- Ability to work independently
