Architectural Historian II - Los Angeles Hybrid

Michael Baker International is seeking an Architectural Historian II to survey historic resources, conduct archival research, and prepare evaluations and technical documentation. The role supports California preservation planning and CEQA/NEPA compliance.

Description

  • Survey and photograph historic-era resources in the field.
  • Research historic properties and cultural resources through online and archival repositories.
  • Develop architectural descriptions and historic context statements.
  • Evaluate resources for the National Register of Historic Places, California Register of Historical Resources, and local historic registers.
  • Help produce technical reports and environmental documentation supporting CEQA and NEPA compliance.
  • Prepare California Department of Parks and Recreation DPR 523 forms.
  • Contribute to preservation planning and cultural resource assignments throughout California.
  • Travel occasionally for field surveys and research.
  • Handle other project duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related discipline.
  • Strong research and analytical capabilities, including experience with online and archival repositories.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe applications.
  • Knowledge of architectural styles and historic resource evaluation practices.
  • Ability to travel across California for field surveys and research.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Master’s degree in Public History, History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related discipline preferred.
  • At least three years of experience as an Architectural Historian preferred.
  • Familiarity with California Department of Parks and Recreation DPR 523 forms preferred.
  • Experience supporting preservation planning for local governments preferred.
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History under 36 CFR Part 61 preferred.
  • Experience writing cultural resources sections for CEQA and NEPA environmental documents preferred.
  • Ability to lead architectural field surveys and technical report projects preferred.
  • Experience developing and implementing cultural resources mitigation measures preferred.
  • Ability to prepare project proposals with detailed task scopes, schedules, and budgets preferred.
