Senior Engineering Manager, Data Platform — Barcelona Hybrid
Lead Preply’s data platform and Lakehouse engineering organization in Barcelona. Build dependable data foundations supporting language learning, analytics, machine learning, and AI products.
Descriere
- Lead and scale a high-performing data engineering team
- Build a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and technical excellence
- Support engineers through regular feedback, mentorship, and career development
- Cultivate an inclusive, collaborative team environment
- Set the long-term direction for Preply’s data foundation, spanning the Lakehouse, ingestion layers, data contracts, enrichment, and governance
- Partner with Analytics, ML Platform, Data Science, and Product teams to identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities
- Turn strategy into achievable delivery plans while balancing platform investment with immediate business needs
- Provide technical direction across batch and streaming ingestion, data modeling, data quality, and governance
- Define SLOs, observability practices, and incident response processes for data pipelines
- Improve code quality, operational excellence, engineering processes, and technology evolution
- Work with stakeholders across the business to align priorities, data ownership, standards, and outcomes
- Maintain hiring quality, team structure, and the team’s operating model
Cerințe
- At least 8 years of software or data engineering experience
- At least 5 years of engineering management experience
- Background leading data or platform engineering teams
- People-focused leadership and strong team-building ability
- Sound technical judgment and systems thinking
- Experience facilitating architecture discussions and assessing technical trade-offs
- Demonstrated success hiring, coaching, and retaining high-performing teams, including senior engineers
- Experience working with Analytics, Data Science, ML, and Product teams
- Clear communication and effective stakeholder leadership
- Evidence of improving performance through measurable goals
- Leadership grounded in ethics, empathy, transparency, accountability, and ownership
- Hands-on experience with modern data stack technologies such as Spark, Flink, Kafka, Debezium, Airflow, and dbt
- Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or an equivalent cloud platform
- Familiarity with contemporary DevOps practices
- Experience leading data platforms serving multiple teams in fast-growing companies
- Experience treating a data platform as a product, including data contracts, self-service onboarding, discoverability, and adoption measurement
- Experience managing data governance, privacy, and compliance at ingestion
- Familiarity with feature stores, ML data pipelines, or GenAI/RAG use cases
- Experience applying Agentic AI to architecture, planning, and decision-making while preserving human judgment and implementing quality gates and safety nets
- Must relocate to Barcelona before the start date
