Senior Communications Officer, California Ocean Science Trust

Apraksts

  • Direct California Ocean Science Trust’s daily communications work.
  • Manage the organization’s public voice, messaging, and reputation across audiences and channels.
  • Counsel the Deputy Director and Executive Director on communications strategy, audiences, timing, framing, visibility, and risk.
  • Create materials for donors and funders, including cases for support, appeals, impact stories, stewardship messages, annual reports, and fundraising content.
  • Make complex scientific, policy, and organizational work clear, accurate, and compelling.
  • Write and edit web and email content, social posts, reports, presentations, public statements, donor materials, and other external communications.
  • Guide the editing of materials prepared by staff.
  • Direct website, email, and social media strategy, content, publishing, and coordination.
  • Maintain the organization-wide editorial and communications calendar.
  • Track web, email, and social media analytics to assess results and improve communications.
  • Support media activity, state and federal engagement, conferences, public presentations, and other prominent engagements.
  • Coordinate media outreach and communications for major events and gatherings.
  • Create communications systems, standards, templates, workflows, and review processes.
  • Align messaging across programs, philanthropy, leadership, and external engagements.
  • Manage communications interns, contractors, and other contributors.
  • Strengthen communications skills and capacity across the organization.
  • Track relevant developments in policy, media, philanthropy, and ocean science.
  • Bring communications opportunities, inconsistencies, and risks to leadership’s attention.

Prasības

  • At least five years of increasingly responsible communications and public relations experience, including work at a senior level.
  • Experience planning and delivering communications strategies for multiple audiences and channels.
  • Experience creating communications for donors, funders, or institutional advancement.
  • Ability to explain complex scientific, technical, policy, or organizational topics to general audiences while preserving accuracy and nuance.
  • Experience advising colleagues or leaders on communications strategy, framing, audience, timing, or tone.
  • Experience directing or coordinating communications produced by colleagues, interns, contractors, or other contributors.
  • Familiarity with California government, public policy, or public-sector settings is preferred; comparable experience in politically or institutionally sensitive environments may qualify.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Sound strategic judgment and political awareness.
  • Ability to tailor framing and language to varied audiences while maintaining a consistent organizational voice.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists, program staff, fundraisers, and senior leaders.
  • Proficiency with digital communications tools such as content management systems, email platforms, social media, analytics, and basic design tools.
  • Willingness to learn and use comparable communications and collaboration tools.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and currently live in California or be willing to relocate there if hired.
