Underwriting Associate - Maryland Remote

Support commercial casualty and enterprise risk underwriting at Brown & Brown Insurance. Prepare account materials, analyze loss runs, and coordinate underwriting activity remotely from Maryland.

Description

  • Assist Underwriters with new business and renewal accounts by organizing documentation, identifying missing information, preparing review files, and tracking open requirements.
  • Use working knowledge of Commercial Auto, Commercial General Liability, and Excess Liability coverage to review submissions, prepare account materials, and answer internal questions.
  • Analyze loss runs for frequency, severity, trends, open claims, and other issues that may require additional underwriting review.
  • Develop underwriting summaries, account worksheets, exposure analyses, and related materials to support evaluation and underwriting decisions.
  • Process underwriting documentation and take appropriate action within established authority, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Coordinate with Underwriters and Oxford departments to provide information needed to bind, issue, endorse, renew, or cancel accounts, and to resolve certificate, inspection, and other account matters.
  • Prepare account correspondence and communicate with internal partners, brokers, and other parties as directed by the Underwriter.
  • Track account activity and follow up on outstanding underwriting information, subjectivities, inspections, recommendations, and related requirements.
  • Keep underwriting files complete, accurate, organized, and compliant with departmental documentation standards.
  • Assist with the evaluation and servicing of Commercial Casualty and Enterprise Risk Management accounts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or one to three years of relevant Property and Casualty insurance experience; equivalent education, training, and industry experience may also be considered.
  • Familiarity with Commercial Auto, Commercial General Liability, and Excess Liability coverage is preferred.
  • Ability to review and interpret commercial insurance policies, applications, endorsements, exposure details, and loss runs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage competing deadlines, and deliver accurate results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to complete, accurate underwriting records.
  • Customer-focused approach with the ability to communicate promptly, professionally, and effectively with Underwriters, internal teams, brokers, clients, and other partners.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational communication skills.
  • Ability to balance internal service standards with broker and client expectations while escalating matters that require underwriting judgment or authority.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, apply sound judgment within established guidelines, and request guidance when needed.
  • Demonstrated initiative, dependability, accountability, and commitment to deadlines and quality standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel, plus the ability to learn underwriting and policy management systems.
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information discreetly.
  • Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and build greater technical knowledge and responsibility over time.
