Software and Firmware Engineering Expert

Experienced software and firmware engineers assess embedded, FPGA, flight, and hardware-test systems. Their technical judgment helps Mercor evaluate and improve AI systems through practical engineering validation.

Description

  • Apply practical software, firmware, and digital hardware expertise to complex engineering work involving physical systems
  • Evaluate embedded firmware, FPGA/RTL designs, flight software, test automation frameworks, hardware interfaces, and system-level workflows
  • Examine architectural and implementation trade-offs across real-time performance, timing, memory, compute capacity, interfaces, reliability, fault handling, concurrency, and hardware/software integration
  • Judge the correctness, resilience, and real-world feasibility of solutions for embedded and hardware-connected systems
  • Detect implementation defects, flawed assumptions, race conditions, timing problems, interface failures, resource limitations, and other system-level risks
  • Create or assess rigorous engineering challenges, reference implementations, test cases, evaluation standards, and technical documentation
  • Apply hands-on experience in development, integration, hardware bring-up, debugging, verification, validation, test automation, and deployment
  • Deliver precise technical feedback informed by production hardware constraints and practical engineering experience
  • Help advance AI reasoning in embedded development, hardware/software integration, digital design, real-time systems, testing, and debugging
  • Work remotely with engineers and researchers on initiatives that train and improve AI systems

Requirements

  • At least five years of professional experience in software, firmware, FPGA, or embedded systems engineering
  • At least three years of recent, hands-on work developing, integrating, testing, bringing up, or troubleshooting software or firmware on physical hardware
  • Experience owning substantial portions of the lifecycle for production hardware-connected software or firmware, from requirements and architecture through implementation, integration, bring-up, verification, validation, debugging, and deployment
  • Deep expertise in at least one core area: embedded firmware and real-time systems, FPGA/RTL design and verification, flight software and safety- or mission-critical systems, or hardware test automation and hardware-in-the-loop infrastructure
  • Strong practical knowledge of relevant technologies such as C/C++, Python, RTOS or bare-metal development, device drivers, bootloaders, embedded Linux, SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, Verilog, SystemVerilog, VHDL, FPGA toolchains, hardware interfaces, telemetry, and automated testing
  • Extensive experience diagnosing software-hardware interactions and physical systems with JTAG/SWD debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, hardware simulators or emulators, HIL/SIL environments, automated test equipment, CI infrastructure, and structured root-cause analysis
  • Demonstrated experience building systems in real-world product development or hardware manufacturing environments
  • Applicants with experience at comparable hardware-focused organizations are encouraged to apply
  • Ability to work as an independent contractor
  • H1-B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported
