Senior/Principal Structural Engineer – Power Generation, Columbus, OH

Design and assess concrete, steel, masonry, and other structures supporting AEP electric generating facilities. Review engineering work, inspect plant infrastructure, and lead complex projects from planning through completion.

Description

  • Deliver advanced structural engineering services for electric generating facilities
  • Design concrete, steel, masonry, wood, sheet piling, and fiber-reinforced plastic structures and components
  • Manage projects through every phase, from initiation to completion
  • Evaluate consultants’ engineering designs, calculations, and drawings
  • Inspect and assess infrastructure at electric generating facilities
  • Prepare inspection reports covering ductwork, stacks, bridges, tanks, river cells, and other components
  • Interpret applicable codes and regulations and establish related standards
  • Coach, train, and provide technical direction to other engineers
  • Direct and coordinate engineering work among internal teams and external organizations
  • Develop and present complex technical reports for management, professional societies, and regulatory authorities
  • Organize and lead technical meetings
  • Analyze challenging engineering issues and devise effective solutions
  • Oversee project budgets using cost-control methods
  • Travel to power stations to support outages and operational requirements
  • Work in power-plant settings with extreme temperatures, hazardous fumes and chemicals, high noise, machinery, and outdoor exposure

Requirements

  • Engineer Senior candidates need at least four years of related experience and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Engineer Senior candidates may qualify with two years of related experience and a master’s degree or PhD in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Engineer Principal candidates need at least eight years of related experience and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Engineer Principal candidates may qualify with six years of related experience and a master’s degree or PhD in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology requires obtaining a certified Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • A bachelor’s degree in non-ABET engineering plus a master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET-accredited bachelor’s program is an accepted alternative
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration in a U.S. state or Puerto Rico is preferred or encouraged
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Capability to deliver presentations and contribute to panel discussions
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Working knowledge of MicroStation or AutoCAD is preferred
  • Proficiency with structural modeling and design tools
  • Experience with STAAD or RISA is preferred
  • Willingness to work occasional overtime and modify the regular schedule
  • Must hold and maintain a valid state driver’s license
  • Ability to travel up to 20%, including same-day and overnight travel
  • Ability to wear required power-station PPE, including a hard hat, eye and hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear
  • Respirator fit testing may be required
