Fervo Energy develops next-generation geothermal projects designed to provide reliable, carbon-free electricity around the clock. Operating at the intersection of energy, manufacturing, and geoscience, the company applies advanced drilling techniques and subsurface analytics to improve geothermal development and help make it a more cost-competitive part of the future electric grid.

Senior Telecommunications Engineer – Hybrid

Lead physical telecommunications infrastructure for geothermal power plants, covering fiber, structured cabling, records, design, construction delivery, and compliance. Partner with IT, OT/I&C, sensing, contractors, and project teams across design, installation, acceptance, and remediation.

Description

  • Lead Fervo’s physical network infrastructure program across outside-plant and inside-plant fiber, structured copper cabling, pathways, telecommunications rooms, racks, cabinets, and passive connectivity.
  • Manage authoritative fiber-management and GIS records spanning IT, OT/I&C, and sensing infrastructure.
  • Establish the infrastructure records program, including tool selection, implementation, and verified baseline development.
  • Maintain copper identifiers, outlets, patch-panel ports, rack layouts, and physical connectivity documentation.
  • Review, approve, and incorporate contractor as-builts, splice diagrams, fiber test traces, and copper certification results.
  • Control documentation for splices, reroutes, strand reallocations, cable additions, and patching modifications.
  • Compare records with installed infrastructure, identify discrepancies, and track corrective actions.
  • Design shared OSP and ISP fiber and structured copper systems with IT, OT/I&C, sensing, and construction stakeholders.
  • Create and review route plans, cable and strand schedules, splice designs, optical-loss budgets, rack elevations, patching layouts, bills of materials, and construction specifications with GIS and CAD tools.
  • Define telecommunications needs for conduit, duct banks, innerduct, cable trays, rooms, racks, and cabinets.
  • Coordinate utility conflicts, permitting, power and cooling needs, grounding, bonding, and building penetrations.
  • Plan physical connectivity for wireless access points, cameras, access-control equipment, and industrial network endpoints.
  • Convert sensing and vendor requirements into specifications for fiber, pathways, splicing, termination, testing, and documentation.
  • Support installation and fault resolution while securing sensing-team approval for changes that may affect measurement performance.
  • Prepare bid packages, scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and acceptance criteria; assess proposals and recommend vendors.
  • Lead contractors and design consultants through detailed design and construction activities.
  • Review submittals and field modifications, inspect installations, and correct design or workmanship issues.
  • Coordinate site access, work sequencing, and service impacts with project and operations teams.
  • Evaluate OTDR traces, optical-loss results, copper permanent-link certifications, labeling, and workmanship against requirements.
  • Troubleshoot physical connectivity failures, direct restoration, verify repair quality and service handoff, and update records.
  • Coordinate field activities with site safety and work-control procedures.
  • Maintain auditable fiber records supporting NERC CIP-005/CIP-006 evidence and SOX general-controls change documentation.

Requirements

  • At least seven years of relevant telecommunications infrastructure experience, including OSP fiber and premises fiber or structured-copper design through construction acceptance with independent project ownership.
  • Experience establishing or operating a fiber records program in which a fiber-management system or GIS serves as the authoritative source for strand inventory, splice records, as-builts, and field reconciliation.
  • Experience designing pathways, telecommunications spaces, racks, cabinets, and passive connectivity.
  • Ability to produce or oversee construction drawings and specifications with GIS and CAD tools.
  • Working knowledge of applicable TIA and BICSI practices and installation codes.
  • Ability to convert network, sensing, and other specialist needs into coordinated physical infrastructure designs.
  • Ability to interpret OTDR traces, optical-loss measurements, and copper-cabling certification reports.
  • Ability to troubleshoot physical-layer problems and make evidence-based acceptance decisions.
  • Experience preparing bid packages, managing contractors, resolving field discrepancies, and enforcing documentation and closeout standards.
  • Demonstrated independence, sound technical judgment, clear documentation habits, and the ability to prioritize work across multiple sites while escalating risks with actionable recommendations.
  • Degree in engineering, telecommunications, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) credential preferred.
  • BICSI Outside Plant (OSP) or relevant fiber and copper testing credentials preferred.
  • Background in telecommunications consulting, structured-cabling design, utilities, industrial facilities, or large campus infrastructure preferred.
  • Experience creating a records program from the ground up or deploying GIS and fiber-management tools across multiple sites preferred.
  • Familiarity with fiber-optic sensing, industrial OT/I&C, or infrastructure audit-evidence practices preferred.

Benefits

  • Full-time position.
  • Hybrid work arrangement.
  • Travel averages approximately 30%.
  • Substantial on-site presence is required during construction.
