Senior SQL Server DBA – Virginia Remote
Administer SQL Server and cloud databases supporting VDOT tolling operations. Maintain availability, tune performance, support migrations, and assist with application operations.
Description
- Manage SQL Server and cloud databases for the Tolling group.
- Provide help desk and application support on a rotating basis with the Tolling team.
- Monitor databases to maintain uptime and availability.
- Troubleshoot application and database issues involving connectivity, access, security, and related areas.
- Tune long-running SQL queries.
- Review and improve database tasks and processes to support agency and group priorities.
- Use operating system scripting utilities for database maintenance, diagnosis, and support.
- Review database implementations and propose, carry out, or direct necessary changes.
- Install SQL Server, including versions 2022 and 2025 or later, with failover clustering.
- Administer, support, and tune SQL Server databases.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Operations professionals.
Requirements
- Extensive experience as a SQL Server database administrator.
- Extensive experience with SQL clustering, mirroring, and high availability.
- Experience managing large SQL databases.
- Strong Transact-SQL development skills.
- Experience tuning SQL Server databases.
- Extensive experience installing, upgrading, patching, and migrating SQL Server databases.
- Experience with Windows platforms.
- Exposure to SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS.
- Experience with Azure Cloud.
- At least two years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server databases.
- At least one year of experience with Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks; a certification may substitute for this experience.
- A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent skills, knowledge, or work history.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using standard requirements and design artifacts.
- Experience with SQL Server 2019 or later.
- Knowledge of data modeling principles.
- Fingerprint-based background check required.
- Two years of SQL Server tuning experience.
- One year of experience working with SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
- One year of experience coding and debugging Transact-SQL.
- One year of experience installing, upgrading, patching, and migrating SQL Server databases.
- Two years of database administration on Azure Cloud, Snowflake, and/or Databricks.
