Northwoods develops software and services for human services agencies across the United States. Its tools support work in child welfare, adult and aging services, economic assistance, and child support, with a focus on helping caseworkers collaborate and spend more time serving people. The team includes licensed social workers and former caseworkers who bring experience from the field to the design of its technology.

Senior Software Engineer, Ruby on Rails and React

Lead end-to-end development of Northwoods’ HHS case-management SaaS products, from design and testing to production support. Work across Rails, React/TypeScript, PostgreSQL, AWS, and AI-assisted development.

Description

  • Own product features and epics from refinement and design through implementation, testing, release, and production follow-up.
  • Design data models, PostgreSQL schema changes, Rails models and services, API contracts, and React/TypeScript components.
  • Document architectural decisions and tradeoffs within established patterns.
  • Join Amigos and refinement sessions, clarify acceptance criteria, identify risks and dependencies, and break oversized work into end-to-end slices.
  • Write and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end automated tests.
  • Apply established architecture patterns, code quality standards, and secure-by-default practices.
  • Protect sensitive case, family, and agency data with least-privilege access, input validation, and data protection practices.
  • Deploy through the GitLab pipeline, verify production changes, and investigate regressions using logs, error tracking, and metrics.
  • Join the on-call rotation, resolve production incidents, communicate status, escalate when needed, and contribute to blameless post-mortems.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools daily and help build the team’s agentic engineering framework.
  • Improve runbooks, prompts, and workflows with the Principal Engineer.
  • Mentor Software Engineers through pairing, code reviews, and actionable feedback.
  • Act as an escalation point for technical issues.
  • Review merge requests for correctness, test coverage, security, and maintainability.
  • Work with Product Managers, QA, DevOps, and Solution Architects.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and decisions clearly in writing.
  • Take on other job-related duties that support departmental goals and continuous improvement.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Strong full-stack skills with Ruby on Rails, React/TypeScript, and PostgreSQL.
  • Ability to own a feature or epic independently, without close direction.
  • Ability to model data, design APIs, assess tradeoffs, and document decisions.
  • Experience with automated unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, deployments, observability, live issue debugging, and on-call or incident response.
  • Daily use of AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Codex, or equivalents.
  • Ability to verify, correct, and reject AI-generated output.
  • Ability to mentor through pairing and code review.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
