Senior Software Engineer, Identity and Privacy — Airbnb (US Remote)

Build backend identity, authorization, and privacy systems for Airbnb’s global lodging platform. Scale migrations, APIs, and infrastructure used by teams across the product.

Description

  • Build and scale backend systems for user identity and privacy
  • Develop services and APIs that apply identity and privacy rules across product surfaces
  • Help migrate systems from legacy identity patterns at scale
  • Create tooling that enables safe, broad migration rollouts
  • Design and refine authorization logic for context-specific data access
  • Collaborate with teams responsible for messaging, trips, profiles, and related systems
  • Contribute to technical design and code reviews
  • Investigate production problems and resolve them through structured root-cause analysis

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of professional experience in backend software engineering
  • Strong knowledge of service-oriented architecture, API design, and data modeling
  • Proficiency in Java or Kotlin
  • Experience working with microservices, including RPC frameworks, service IDLs, and dependency injection
  • Experience designing systems where correctness and authorization are core requirements
  • Demonstrated experience delivering migrations or infrastructure changes adopted by other teams
  • Careful attention to backward compatibility and safe rollout practices
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly document problems, root causes, and trade-offs between solutions
  • Ability to translate complex, changing privacy or identity requirements into practical technical designs
  • Residence in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity
