Senior SaaS Controller

Lead accounting, revenue recognition, controls, and audit readiness for Opensend’s recurring revenue SaaS business. Manage a two-person accounting team and build scalable financial operations.

Description

  • Set and document accounting policies and procedures that follow GAAP and SaaS best practices.
  • Oversee the general ledger, chart of accounts, monthly and annual close, reconciliations, accruals, consolidations, and financial statements.
  • Maintain the close calendar, review standards, documentation requirements, and accounting team responsibilities.
  • Manage ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription, usage-based, and credit-based arrangements.
  • Reconcile billing data, cash collections, deferred and recognized revenue, and company ARR definitions.
  • Oversee accounts receivable and payable, cash accounting, expense controls, fixed assets, and core accounting operations.
  • Manage multi-state sales tax compliance, including nexus monitoring, registrations, filings, reconciliations, and exposure assessments.
  • Oversee accounting systems, integrations, data quality, and the accounting roadmap.
  • Prepare for financial statement audits, quality of earnings reviews, lender and investor requests, and transaction diligence.
  • Work with the COO and FP&A and business leaders on reporting, cash visibility, forecasting inputs, and decision support.
  • Assess significant accounting judgments and estimates, document technical memos, and escalate material or novel issues.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a two-person accounting team.
  • Identify risks early, explain their business impact, and recommend practical solutions.

Requirements

  • Bring at least eight years of progressive accounting experience, including substantial ownership in SaaS, subscription, usage-based, or similarly complex recurring-revenue businesses.
  • Hold an active CPA designation in the United States or Canada, or an equivalent designation accepted in the role’s jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrate ownership of the general ledger, close, reconciliations, financial statements, and internal controls.
  • Have deep working knowledge of ASC 606, including the ability to write and defend a technical accounting memo.
  • Have experience with multi-state sales tax.
  • Have experience with financial statement audits, quality of earnings reviews, financing diligence, or strategic transactions.
  • Have experience leading a small accounting team and be ready to handle detailed work directly.
  • Show strong written judgment: identify issues, distinguish facts from assumptions, explain risks, and recommend decisions.
  • Preferred: experience at a bootstrapped, profitable, founder-led, or private-equity-ready software company with USD 10 million to USD 50 million in ARR.
  • Preferred: experience accounting for monthly and annual billing models.
  • Preferred: experience connecting billing systems, payment processors, CRM data, revenue schedules, and the general ledger.
  • Preferred: experience selecting or implementing an ERP, close management, billing, revenue automation, or sales tax platform.
  • Preferred: cross-border accounting experience involving both Canada and the United States.
  • Preferred: experience improving diligence readiness or supporting an acquisition, recapitalization, or other strategic transaction.
  • Overlap by at least three hours each workday with Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
  • Reside in Canada or the United States.
