Senior Remote Sensing Data Scientist, Calibration and Validation

Lead production calibration and image-processing pipelines for multispectral infrared data from FireSat and SBEM satellite missions. Apply testing, monitoring, and radiometric validation to support wildfire and environmental-monitoring data products.

Description

  • Design, build, and operate production calibration and image-processing pipelines for multispectral infrared imagery from FireSat and SBEM missions
  • Convert calibration algorithms into robust, thoroughly tested production software
  • Manage unit, integration, and regression testing across representative laboratory and on-orbit datasets
  • Analyze pre-launch and on-orbit calibration data to derive, validate, and track calibration coefficients
  • Develop monitoring, alerting, and automated diagnostic visualizations for calibration accuracy, noise, uniformity, and image-quality measures
  • Support CI/CD, deployment, containerization, and observability systems
  • Collaborate with calibration scientists and the IR Instrument team during pre-launch and on-orbit calibration campaigns
  • Lead code review, version control, documentation, calibration coefficient and lookup-table management, test coverage, and reliability improvements
  • Collaborate across functions to maintain scientific quality, quantitative validation, and radiometric integrity in infrared data products
  • Develop expertise in measurement methods, geospatial data engineering, software engineering, and customer-domain requirements as needed

Requirements

  • PhD plus 3 or more years, MS plus 6 or more years, or BS plus 8 or more years of industry experience
  • At least 4 years of experience calibrating imaging instruments
  • Practical experience working with complex data from newly developed imaging instruments
  • Demonstrated experience delivering and operating production data or analytics pipelines for scientific data, including monitoring, logging, alerting, and automated testing
  • Experience turning scientific or numerical algorithms into maintainable production software with unit and integration tests and quantitative validation against reference data
  • Advanced Python software engineering skills, including modern packaging, pytest or comparable frameworks, version control, code review, and CI/CD workflows
  • Strong foundation in statistics, applied mathematics, and instrument physics
  • Ability to collaborate with a distributed, interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-moving startup environment
  • Must meet ITAR/EAR export-control eligibility requirements as a U.S. person, someone eligible to access the information without export authorization, or someone eligible and reasonably likely to obtain the required authorization
