Senior Catastrophe Risk Analyst - Hybrid

Analyze catastrophe models and natural hazard data for American Family Insurance. Support portfolio strategy, pricing, underwriting, and enterprise risk decisions.

Description

  • Lead complex catastrophe risk analyses and related initiatives
  • Convert catastrophe model outputs and exposure data into practical business insights
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to resolve business challenges and inform strategic decisions
  • Shape portfolio strategy, risk appetite, and business planning through data-driven recommendations
  • Serve as a subject matter resource for catastrophe risk
  • Support response activities following catastrophe events
  • Improve analytics, reporting, and risk management processes continuously
  • Conduct catastrophe modeling analyses, from input assessment and model setup through execution, result extraction, and loss analysis
  • Explain catastrophe model fundamentals, including hazard, vulnerability, and financial components
  • Build analytical tools, reports, and datasets using geospatial analysis techniques
  • Investigate natural hazard data for exposure dashboards, product development, pricing, and underwriting
  • Support rate filings and responses to Department of Insurance objections
  • Automate daily monitoring of U.S. catastrophe events and assess potential enterprise impact
  • Assess catastrophe management software and models while researching industry practices and earth science technologies
  • Deliver catastrophe risk insights and recommendations to colleagues and business partners
  • Help select research tools, design research processes, and develop new methodologies
  • Monitor industry best practices and business strategies
  • Introduce innovative approaches that support business development
  • Complete additional assignments and participate in projects as requested
  • Report to a CAT Risk Senior Manager

Requirements

  • Preferred experience of 3–5 years or more
  • Programming experience in R, Python, or comparable languages
  • Strong analytical capabilities
  • Experience delivering customer-focused solutions, support, or service
  • Practical experience with catastrophe management software and peril models
  • In-depth understanding of natural catastrophe risk, its insurance applications, and catastrophe modeling
  • Programming proficiency for database access, scripting, and statistical analysis
  • Working knowledge of geospatial software and data
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly
  • Experience working with large structured, semi-structured, and unstructured datasets
  • Experience making independent decisions and applying project management methods and practices
  • Knowledge of data-at-scale management using summarization, query, and analysis tools
  • Residence within approximately 35–50 miles of Madison, Wisconsin, or Boston, Massachusetts

  • Successful completion of applicable background checks
  • Ability to sign a non-disclosure agreement covering proprietary information, trade secrets, and inventions
