Senior Backend Software Engineer (Java) – Doodle, Berlin Hybrid

Build scalable Java backend services, GraphQL APIs, and Kafka-based event-driven systems for Doodle’s meeting-scheduling platform. Help solve complex challenges in managing, processing, and presenting time across global markets.

Description

  • Design, develop, and deploy scalable, high-performance backend services in Java
  • Expose backend capabilities through GraphQL, with attention to efficient data retrieval and query performance
  • Create Kafka-based event-driven solutions that support reliable data flows and responsive systems
  • Maintain a broad understanding of the backend landscape and its integrations across distributed infrastructure
  • Apply LLM and agentic development tools while retaining complete understanding and ownership of the resulting code
  • Address complex challenges in the global management, processing, and presentation of time
  • Work with cross-functional teams to turn complex scheduling needs into effective technical solutions
  • Contribute to hiring through technical interviews, home assignments, executive and HR interviews, and reference checks

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Professional experience designing, developing, and delivering production-ready, highly concurrent Java backend services
  • Strong systems-level thinking and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to read, debug, and comprehend codebases written in multiple languages
  • Hands-on experience with distributed systems, microservices, and Kafka-based event-driven architectures
  • Located in Germany and fully authorized to work there
  • Existing authorization to work in Germany is required
  • Visa sponsorship is not available
  • Relocation assistance is not available
  • Advanced experience with AI-assisted engineering workflows is a plus
  • Knowledge of reactive programming, AWS or GCP, Docker, and Kubernetes is a plus
  • A foundation in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems design is a plus
  • Experience designing and serving APIs, preferably GraphQL, is a plus
