Senior Accountant, Cleanup Manager (Remote)

Lead financial cleanup projects for Breakwater Accounting + Advisory, resolving inaccurate records and rebuilding dependable reporting. Reconcile accounts, improve processes, and guide clients through complex accounting issues.

Description

  • Investigate disorganized financial records to establish what occurred and identify the underlying causes.
  • Trace transactions to find errors, omissions, and ineffective processes.
  • Design and execute practical financial cleanup plans.
  • Reconstruct financial activity when source records are incomplete.
  • Reconcile and validate balance sheet accounts, including cash, payroll, loans, revenue, prepaids, accruals, fixed assets, and equity.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and clear documentation that explain and substantiate account balances.
  • Redesign charts of accounts when necessary.
  • Structure financial reporting so business owners can readily understand their operations.
  • Analyze invoicing, payroll, inventory, and expense workflows to locate process failures.
  • Help implement procedures that reduce the risk of recurring problems.
  • Resolve complex QuickBooks Online issues and investigate persistent account balances.
  • Apply modern accounting tools and AI to improve problem-solving and efficiency.
  • Work directly with clients to collect information, explain accounting matters, and maintain project momentum.
  • Partner with the Breakwater team, document completed work, and prepare organized handoffs for the ongoing accounting team.
  • Oversee multiple financial cleanup projects at the same time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • At least five years of advanced accounting, audit, or full-cycle bookkeeping experience.
  • Strong practical understanding of balance sheet mechanics.
  • Experience with accruals, revenue recognition, depreciation, amortization, and other complex accounting principles.
  • Previous experience as a reviewer, senior accountant, auditor, or in a comparable role.
  • Demonstrated success cleaning up disorganized or inaccurate financial records.
  • Expert proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
  • Strong investigative judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain focus and carry issues through to resolution.
  • Confidence explaining complex financial matters to people without accounting backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage several projects while maintaining close attention to detail.
  • Experience in an outsourced, multi-client accounting environment is preferred.
  • Experience with Xero, Dext, Ramp, BILL, Gusto, ACS/Realm, and advanced Excel is preferred.
