Semester At Sea / Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) is a nonprofit education and travel organization that operates a floating college campus aboard a passenger ship. Its semester-length programs combine accredited academic courses with field experiences in countries across multiple continents, giving undergraduates, gap-year students, recent graduates, international students, and lifelong learners an immersive setting for global learning. Faculty-led coursework, in-country programs, and shipboard community life are central to the experience, which focuses on academic credit, intercultural understanding, and global citizenship.

Residential Education Coordinator – Semester at Sea (Onboard, Full-Time)

Coordinate residential life, student welfare, programming, and crisis response aboard Semester at Sea’s global shipboard campus. Support residential communities and student-life initiatives during the Spring 2027 voyage.

Description

  • Develop and deliver the shipboard co-curricular program
  • Address student concerns and critical incidents
  • Foster students’ intellectual growth and personal development
  • Promote the welfare of all students, particularly those in the assigned residential area
  • Enhance student quality of life through programming, community building, policy enforcement, and appropriate relationships
  • Rotate as an on-call first responder and remain aboard ship during duty periods, which may last up to 24 consecutive hours
  • Supervise an assigned student assistant
  • Lead an assigned collateral area, such as Exploration, Well-Being and Recreation, Inclusion and Belonging, Reflection, Student Activities, or Organizations and Clubs
  • Attend the in-person Student Life Team Orientation in Fort Collins, Colorado
  • Join pre-voyage training sessions and scheduled HR, orientation, and team training calls
  • Advise student leaders and organizations, coordinate programs and events, and support learning, well-being, inclusion, reflection, recreation, and community development according to the collateral assignment

Requirements

  • Available for a full-semester assignment
  • Authorized to work in the United States
  • Hold a valid passport and required visas, or be able to obtain them, and complete vaccinations required or directed by the program
  • Passport valid for at least six months after the voyage
  • U.S. passport holders are recommended to have at least 15 blank passport pages
  • Successfully complete a background check
  • Support ISE’s mission and commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Knowledge of and ability to serve culturally diverse communities
  • At least three years of full-time professional experience in student affairs with undergraduate students at a college or university
  • Master’s degree in higher education and student affairs administration or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience supporting student learning and academic achievement
  • Experience creating environments where students can ask questions and seek assistance comfortably
  • Able to work flexibly and complete tasks efficiently
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with program constituents
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage competing priorities in a complex, dynamic environment
  • Sound judgment across a range of issues
  • Experience handling emergency or crisis situations
  • Preferred: training or participation in diversity, inclusion, and equity initiatives
  • Preferred: two years of graduate residence life experience or one year of full-time residence life experience
  • Preferred: experience advising student organizations
  • Preferred: experience serving in an on-call role at a higher education institution
  • Able to perform the required physical duties, including computer work, extended walking and standing, lifting, carrying, bending, moving objects up to 25 pounds, and climbing stairs
