Nuclear Engineer - Newport News, VA

Design and evaluate nuclear systems while supporting radiation safety and radiological controls at Newport News Shipbuilding. Contribute to maintenance and support operations for Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines.

Description

  • Create, develop, and test nuclear equipment and systems
  • Investigate materials with specialized applications in nuclear reactors
  • Analyze methods for detecting and controlling radiation and radioactive contamination
  • Evaluate the nuclear fuel cycle to support efficient material use and safe waste disposal
  • Conduct radiation transport modeling, statistical analysis, and performance-metric research
  • Advise on technology and process options that improve safety, performance, efficiency, or cost
  • Deliver engineering, monitoring, training, radiation health, technical, and emergency-planning support for the Newport News Shipbuilding Radiological Control Program
  • Support Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with no experience, or a high school diploma or equivalent plus four years of relevant experience
  • Undergraduate degree from an ABET-accredited program
  • Proficiency with desktop or personal computers and word processing, graphics, database, and spreadsheet software
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Able to work in office, industrial, shipboard, and laboratory settings
  • Able to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and tolerate substantial temperature variations
  • Experience in the U.S. Navy nuclear propulsion program aboard submarines or aircraft carriers preferred
  • Experience operating commercial nuclear power plants preferred
