Mechanical Designer/Drafter – AutoCAD

Create 2D drawings and 3D models for U.S. Navy submarines and unmanned underwater vehicles. Conduct ship checks and support shipboard installation documentation.

Description

  • Support mechanical design and drafting for U.S. Navy submarine programs and unmanned underwater vehicles.
  • Conduct ship checks aboard U.S. Navy submarines to gather field data and validate existing configurations.
  • Research submarine construction using ship drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Work with Mechanical Engineers to develop 3D solid models for optimized shipboard mechanical installations.
  • Produce 2D component and assembly drawings that meet applicable standards.
  • Create, update, and maintain Lists of Material (LOM).
  • Assist senior Mechanical Designers/Drafters with shipboard installation and arrangement drawings.
  • Use mechanical drafting practices and engineering concepts to develop design solutions.
  • Apply GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
  • Review drawings and models for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Take part in internal design reviews and address review feedback.
  • Organize electronic design files and follow configuration management and document control procedures.
  • Coordinate with engineers, designers, and program team members to clarify design intent and requirements.
  • Manage assigned tasks, meet scheduled deliverables, and report progress.
  • Follow QMS procedures and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Meet safety, security, export control, and confidentiality obligations.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of War (DoW) Secret Clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required to obtain and retain the necessary security clearance.
  • High school diploma or GED plus a Computer-Aided Design/Drafting Certificate.
  • At least three years of business-related experience creating 2D CAD drawings and/or 3D solid models.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical drafting principles, manufacturing processes, and drawing conventions.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and technical drawings.
  • Autodesk AutoCAD and Inventor experience is preferred but not required; SOLIDWORKS experience is acceptable.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience using Adobe PDF tools.
  • Physical ability to conduct ship checks aboard U.S. Navy submarines.
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces and climb 20- to 25-foot vertical ladders without assistance.
  • May require travel to Navy facilities and shipyards.
