Mathematical Physicist (PhD) – Remote Contract

Develop, solve, review, and audit research-level physics problems in your area of expertise. Apply rigorous mathematical reasoning and symbolic computation to support Mercor’s frontier AI training projects.

Description

  • Work on research-level physics problems in your own subfield.
  • Create, solve, review, or audit problems according to your publication record and matched research area.
  • Write complete reasoning that another specialist can follow and verify.
  • Work on assignments in special functions, integrable systems, permutation combinatorics for random tensor network entanglement, or conformal geometry.
  • Use relevant mathematical and computational methods, including symbolic computation.
  • Complete an application covering your education, research experience, methods, and best-fit areas.
  • Provide arXiv IDs or DOIs, author position, and demonstrated methods for selected areas.
  • Attend onboarding or a brief live alignment call if invited.
  • Complete a 30–45 minute assessment if required.
  • Collaborate with researchers on projects to train and improve AI systems.

Requirements

  • A PhD in mathematical physics, theoretical physics, or mathematics is required.
  • Postdoctoral researchers, research scientists, and junior faculty are the strongest fits.
  • Senior PhD students with a strong first-author publication record may apply.
  • Published research must cover the specific listed phenomena, rather than adjacent topics.
  • Provide a verifiable record of three to five representative papers, with arXiv IDs or DOIs; first authorship is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrate relevant methods in your own publications.
  • Working proficiency in LaTeX, Python, SymPy, and Jupyter.
  • Familiarity with an agentic coding extension in VS Code is useful; disclose any gaps.
  • English proficiency at B2 level or higher, including written reasoning.
  • Available to work 10 hours per week over an 8–10 week period, starting immediately.
  • Engagement is as an independent contractor.
  • H-1B and STEM OPT candidates cannot be supported.
  • Provide your author position and demonstrated methods for each selected research area.
