Description

  • Lead and expand a backend and data engineering team while contributing directly to the codebase
  • Set technical direction for backend services, APIs, data platforms, and integrations spanning simulation, AI, frontend, and platform engineering
  • Design, build, and operate secure, dependable Python services, APIs, workers, and integration components
  • Turn product, research, and domain needs into system architectures, technical plans, and incremental deliverables
  • Set engineering practices for API design, service boundaries, testing, observability, error handling, migrations, security, and code review
  • Develop enterprise software for cloud, private-cloud, customer-managed, on-premises, and disconnected environments
  • Work with platform and data engineering leaders to deliver systems that are deployable, observable, performant, and maintainable
  • Facilitate design reviews, RFCs, technical planning, and architecture decisions
  • Investigate and resolve complex problems across services, databases, queues, APIs, infrastructure, and external integrations
  • Review code, mentor engineers, and assess AI-generated code for high-assurance environments
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and government stakeholders to align platform capabilities with mission requirements
  • Recruit, develop, and scale the backend and data engineering organization while helping plan headcount and technical capacity

Requirements

  • Substantial experience building and operating production backend systems for enterprise software
  • Advanced Python skills, including experience designing services, APIs, background workers, and integration layers
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through architecture guidance, code review, mentoring, and delivery ownership for a small team
  • Strong knowledge of service architecture, domain modeling, API contracts, system boundaries, and failure modes
  • Experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, plus strong SQL and data-modeling fundamentals
  • Experience using ORMs and database migration tools such as SQLAlchemy, Alembic, Django ORM, or similar technologies
  • Track record delivering secure, reliable, and observable production software
  • Familiarity with cloud deployment approaches on AWS, Azure, GCP, or comparable platforms
  • Experience supporting private-cloud, on-premises, customer-managed, appliance-style, or disconnected deployments
  • Practical judgment when balancing data consistency, reliability, observability, and operational support
  • Effective cross-functional communication and the ability to turn ambiguous requirements into clear plans and working software
  • An active U.S. security clearance is strongly preferred
  • U.S. work authorization may be required for project assignments involving security clearance
