Founding Backend Engineer - San Francisco Onsite
Build APIs and infrastructure for AI agents as a founding backend engineer. Lead production projects from concept to launch and help support enterprise deployments from San Francisco.
Description
- Design and build APIs and backend infrastructure that enable AI agents to communicate, authenticate, and operate
- Lead 0-to-1 initiatives from customer discovery and scoping through system design and production launch
- Contribute across the stack, with work weighted approximately 80% toward backend engineering
- Develop systems involving distributed architectures, databases, and developer tooling
- Propose ideas that can improve the product and accelerate growth
- Act as a primary contact for customer feedback while helping deliver enterprise deployments
- Produce clear, maintainable code and technical documentation
- Process hundreds of thousands of emails each day
Requirements
- Bring 0–7 years of professional experience
- Demonstrate strong TypeScript skills or proficiency with a comparable modern framework
- Have experience at a FAANG company or a recognized venture-backed startup at Series A or later
- Understand backend fundamentals, including REST API design, system design, and server-side architecture
- Show a history of taking production features from 0 to 1 and owning them with real users
- Hold a computer science or technical degree from a leading engineering school, particularly if applying as a new graduate
- Take initiative and independently drive work through completion
- Communicate tradeoffs, blockers, and technical decisions clearly
- Be located in San Francisco or willing to relocate there
- Work onsite five days per week
- Email, messaging, or protocol-heavy systems experience, including SMTP, IMAP, or OAuth, is a bonus
- Cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, or developer tooling experience is a bonus, especially with AI, LLM, or agent workflows
- Previous founding, fellowship, or 0-to-1 building experience is a bonus
