Environmental Permitting and Siting Engineer - Hybrid

Support Southern Company’s electric generation and energy operations through environmental permitting, air compliance, generation siting, due diligence, and regulatory projects.

Description

  • Partner with Southern Company operating companies’ Environmental Affairs teams on permitting, generation siting, and compliance
  • Prepare and manage multimedia environmental permit applications and supporting documents for existing, new, and modified emission sources
  • Direct consultants supporting air dispersion modeling and environmental permitting projects
  • Evaluate regulatory applicability, including New Source Review, emissions calculations, and compliance support
  • Provide environmental guidance for generation siting, development, and business development activities
  • Lead environmental due diligence reviews for prospective generation sources
  • Contribute to environmental reporting, strategy, and policy development
  • Respond to management inquiries about permitting, air-quality impacts of growth, and related issues
  • Participate in cross-functional teams and coordinate with external stakeholders
  • Work with Technical Shared Services, Legal, Research and Development, Fuels, Planning, Commercial Operations, and external consultants

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a relevant scientific discipline from an accredited four-year college is required
  • A master’s degree and related professional certifications are preferred
  • Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer credentials are preferred
  • Experience with environmental permitting or compliance is preferred
  • Experience with air permitting and compliance is preferred
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations and air, land, or water compliance requirements is preferred
  • Familiarity with power generation, plant operations, and emissions-control technologies is preferred
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Initiative, strategic thinking, problem-solving ability, and a strong customer focus
  • Proven project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate complex topics effectively in writing and verbally
  • Ability to collaborate in teams with varied disciplines and backgrounds
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
  • Working knowledge of PivotTables, macros, VBA, and SQL is preferred
