Director of Environment and Permitting — Vancouver

Lead environmental compliance, permitting, reclamation, and closure programs across First Majestic Silver’s mining operations in Mexico and the United States. Advise senior leadership on regulatory risk and sustainable mining practices.

Description

  • Lead environmental compliance, permitting, reclamation, and closure activities across operating sites and development projects
  • Create and execute strategies covering environmental management, permitting, reclamation, and mine closure
  • Advise the COO and executive leaders on environmental risks, regulatory obligations, and permitting issues
  • Set and maintain environmental standards, policies, and management systems
  • Track environmental performance and lead ongoing improvement initiatives
  • Direct permitting and regulatory approvals for operations, expansions, development projects, and closure programs
  • Oversee permit applications, environmental studies, technical documentation, and regulatory submissions
  • Track regulatory changes and recommend appropriate responses
  • Assess environmental and permitting exposure and implement mitigation measures
  • Oversee environmental monitoring, reporting, audits, inspections, and compliance initiatives
  • Manage environmental incidents, compliance breaches, and corrective measures
  • Support environmental due diligence for acquisitions, divestitures, and strategic growth opportunities
  • Direct reclamation, mine closure, and post-closure planning
  • Incorporate closure obligations into life-of-mine plans and operating decisions
  • Contribute to closure plans, cost projections, and financial assurance obligations
  • Support Sustainability team engagement with regulators, government agencies, Indigenous communities, local communities, and other stakeholders
  • Take part in environmental, permitting, regulatory, and sustainability meetings, consultations, and engagement activities
  • Prepare or support presentations, reports, correspondence, and related documentation
  • Track commitments, obligations, and action items while coordinating follow-up
  • Work closely with operations, community relations, and sustainability teams
  • Maintain records covering environmental performance, permits, regulatory submissions, and compliance
  • Lead, coach, and develop environmental and permitting staff
  • Manage departmental budgets, resources, consultants, and external technical specialists
  • Provide recurring updates to the COO and Executive Leadership Team

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental engineering, or a related discipline
  • Membership in good standing, or eligibility for membership, with a recognized British Columbia professional regulatory body such as P.Eng., RP Bio, or P.Geo., including eligibility to provide professional reliance under the Professional Governance Act
  • Professional fluency in English
  • Spanish language skills are an asset
  • At least eight years of experience managing environmental permitting and corporate sustainability programs in mining or natural resources
  • Experience managing permitting across multiple jurisdictions, including baseline studies, environmental and social impact assessments, consultation, and coordination with internal design and project teams
  • Experience preparing external ESG, corporate responsibility, and sustainability reports
  • Experience in environmental assessment, permitting, follow-up, and monitoring
  • International knowledge of mining infrastructure and its relationship to environmental compliance
  • Ability to consolidate and visually present environmental information in reports, memoranda, and presentations, present to varied audiences, answer questions, and address concerns
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems, hazard and risk assessment, critical-task controls, environmental protection by design, site performance, environmental leadership, and regulatory compliance
  • Familiarity with mine water and load balance studies and scenarios
  • Ability to deliver strategies and actions on schedule and direct consultants when needed
  • Demonstrated experience managing procurement and contract execution with varied environmental consulting providers
  • Ability to resolve complex issues and ensure consultants and site teams meet corporate permitting and closure goals
  • Knowledge of international engineering standards
  • Strong writing, communication, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Broad knowledge of Canadian regulatory environments
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Project
