Database Administrator - Nebraska Remote

Manage MongoDB Atlas and related cloud database platforms for Nelnet’s education payment technology services. Monitor performance, security, backups, capacity, and production reliability across database environments.

Description

  • Administer MongoDB Atlas and maintain operational health across production, test, and preview environments
  • Track MongoDB Atlas alerts, performance indicators, cluster health, and resource consumption
  • Examine logs and monitoring systems to detect issues before they affect applications
  • Help manage cluster performance and capacity by reviewing workload patterns, storage expansion, sizing, and autoscaling
  • Assess query and index efficiency with MongoDB Atlas monitoring and diagnostic tools
  • Work with development teams to investigate inefficient queries and application behavior
  • Administer MongoDB databases, collections, indexes, users, roles, network controls, and security configurations
  • Support MongoDB Atlas backups, restores, point-in-time recovery, disaster recovery exercises, and recovery verification
  • Assist with MongoDB Atlas maintenance and platform updates, including upgrades, version changes, scaling, and configuration modifications
  • Join incident response and production troubleshooting efforts to determine root causes and restore service
  • Resolve application connectivity and database access problems with development, application support, and Cloud Operations teams
  • Help manage database security and access, including requests, role assignments, permission updates, and termination reviews
  • Review, test, and document approved database changes as part of change management
  • Assess MongoDB Atlas features, automation possibilities, and operational processes
  • Provide support for Redis, Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, and Azure SQL Managed Instance platforms
  • Record procedures, configurations, troubleshooting guidance, recurring support activities, and incident conclusions
  • Expand technical expertise in MongoDB Atlas and related cloud database technologies

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, technology, or a related discipline; equivalent education and experience may qualify
  • Preferred: at least five years working with database systems, data platforms, or related technical database environments
  • Strongly preferred: at least one year of hands-on MongoDB or MongoDB Atlas experience
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, or Azure SQL Managed Instance is beneficial
  • Experience with cloud platforms, monitoring solutions, or application troubleshooting is valuable
  • Solid knowledge of database fundamentals, including databases, collections or tables, indexes, queries, security, backup, and recovery
  • Understanding of document-oriented and NoSQL database principles
  • Understanding of database performance, including query behavior, indexing, resource use, and performance monitoring
  • Familiarity with cloud database services such as MongoDB Atlas, Azure SQL, Azure SQL Managed Instance, AWS database services, or comparable platforms
  • Familiarity with monitoring and troubleshooting tools, including the use of metrics, logs, and alerts for investigations
  • Basic knowledge of cloud networking and application connectivity
  • Familiarity with authentication, access control, and security principles
  • Basic understanding of the software development lifecycle
  • Familiarity with change management, incident management, and Agile methods is beneficial
  • Available to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to production incidents when needed
  • Complete the MongoDB University MongoDB Atlas Administrator Path within the first three months of employment
  • Successfully complete the MongoDB Atlas Administrator Exam and earn the MongoDB Associate Atlas Administrator certification within the first six months of employment
