Chief Electrical Inspector, Jefferson County Development Services

Lead electrical installation inspections for Jefferson County Development Services. Enforce codes, review plans, and supervise inspection staff.

Description

  • Lead and take part in inspections of electrical installations throughout Jefferson County
  • Verify compliance with applicable codes and ordinances
  • Notify relevant parties about violations found during inspections
  • Clarify code requirements for others
  • Issue stop-work notices for unauthorized, substandard, or code-violating work
  • Monitor the output and quality of subordinate employees
  • Enforce codes and ordinances by assessing potential violations against applicable requirements
  • Research and review codes, ordinances, notices, permits, new materials, and code amendments
  • Inspect electrical work for conformance with approved plans
  • Inspect general contractor work, verify permits, review plans, and issue Certificates of Occupancy
  • Inspect for life safety, accessibility, and natural-disaster-related concerns
  • Review construction plans for compliance with codes
  • Continue professional development and stay current on relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and guidelines
  • Manage staff by assigning and distributing work, directing duties, tracking progress, giving feedback, and providing training

Requirements

  • Hold a valid driver's license
  • Have Master Electrician Certification from the State of Alabama, Jefferson County, or the City of Birmingham
  • Hold a State of Alabama Electrical Contractor license
  • Have experience inspecting other electricians' work
  • Have experience applying and interpreting the National Electrical Code (NEC) for inspectors, contractors, or homeowners
  • Be able to interpret and understand engineering and architectural plans
  • Be able to occasionally perform extended periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or running
  • Be able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
