  • Create, test, and support enterprise Java applications, microservices, and backend services with Spring Boot
  • Implement data-access layers using Spring Data, JPA/Hibernate, and JDBC
  • Connect enterprise systems through synchronous and asynchronous integrations
  • Design secure REST APIs according to API-first and OpenAPI practices
  • Enforce API conventions for versioning, errors, authentication, authorization, pagination, and observability
  • Contribute to API architecture and governance reviews
  • Build event-driven integrations with JMS and Apache Kafka across producers, consumers, listeners, topics, queues, and processing components
  • Strengthen messaging reliability through acknowledgments, retries, timeouts, error handling, and dead-letter strategies
  • Manage Kafka topics, partitions, consumer groups, offsets, serialization, and schemas
  • Design and tune relational database structures, indexes, stored procedures, transactions, and SQL queries
  • Manage database schema versioning with Flyway or Liquibase
  • Create automated unit, integration, API, database, messaging, and regression tests
  • Use automated and AI-assisted methods to produce test cases, data, and scenarios
  • Containerize applications with Docker and deploy, operate, and diagnose them on Kubernetes
  • Develop CI/CD pipelines covering builds, testing, migrations, security checks, image creation, and Kubernetes releases
  • Create and support API and developer portals with interactive OpenAPI references, catalogs, guides, examples, and onboarding flows
  • Build responsive, accessible web and portal experiences with React or Angular, JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, and CSS
  • Investigate application, integration, database, messaging, and performance problems
  • Take part in peer reviews and ongoing engineering improvements
  • Partner with DevOps, platform engineering, UX, API, and backend teams

  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a CBP Public Trust investigation for CBP roles
  • An active Secret clearance for Department of State roles
  • About three to six years of professional software development experience
  • Strong Java skills with practical experience in Spring Boot and the broader Spring ecosystem
  • Background designing REST APIs and microservices, including OpenAPI/Swagger and API-first development
  • Experience with enterprise messaging platforms such as JMS and Apache Kafka
  • Strong SQL and relational database development experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, or similar systems
  • Experience with JPA/Hibernate, Spring Data, and/or JDBC
  • Experience creating automated unit, integration, API, database, and messaging tests using tools such as JUnit, Mockito, and REST Assured
  • Experience developing containerized applications with Docker and working with Kubernetes
  • Experience building automated CI/CD pipelines with Git and contemporary source-control practices
  • Experience developing React or Angular web applications with JavaScript and/or TypeScript
  • Knowledge of application, API, messaging, and database security fundamentals
  • Strong debugging, diagnostic, and problem-solving abilities
  • Availability for remote work on East Coast hours and approximately quarterly travel
  • Preferred: Experience with Spring Kafka and Spring JMS
  • Preferred: Experience managing Kafka consumer groups, partitioning, schemas, retries, and dead-letter topics
  • Preferred: Experience with JMS-compatible systems such as IBM MQ, ActiveMQ, or Artemis
  • Preferred: Experience with automated or AI-assisted test generation and Arazzo or similar API testing tools
  • Preferred: Experience using Flyway or Liquibase
  • Preferred: Experience with API or developer portals including Scalar, Redocly, Swagger UI, or Backstage
  • Preferred: Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Preferred: Experience deploying Spring Boot applications on Kubernetes and familiarity with Helm
  • Preferred: Understanding of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, and API authentication and authorization
  • Preferred: Familiarity with API gateways, API management, observability, DevSecOps, and automated security scanning
