Water Resources Engineer (Mid to Senior Level) – San Diego Onsite

Join Moffatt & Nichol in San Diego to design flood, stormwater, and hydraulic infrastructure. Lead modeling, bid documentation, regulatory compliance, and project coordination.

Description

  • Develop surface water hydraulic, hydrologic, and hydrodynamic models
  • Complete engineering calculations for surface water and drainage systems
  • Evaluate system flows, flood hazards, and mitigation options
  • Support flood damage prevention and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Create exhibits, reports, and presentations that communicate findings and recommendations
  • Prepare plans, specifications, estimates, and related project documentation
  • Coordinate with government agencies, local authorities, contractors, subcontractors, and client managers
  • Act as technical lead for surface water, flood risk, and estuarine or coastal restoration and protection projects
  • Provide oversight to junior engineering staff when appropriate
  • Conduct numerical modeling for stormwater and drainage improvement projects
  • Perform one-dimensional and two-dimensional riverine hydraulic modeling
  • Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates for final bid packages
  • Contribute to design work and project meetings
  • Help determine technical approaches, feasibility, costs, construction methods, and schedules
  • Produce project graphics, reports, and presentations
  • Resolve diverse technical and project issues through creative problem-solving

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering is required
  • Master’s degree in science is preferred
  • Five to ten or more years of relevant experience is required
  • Engineer-in-Training certification is required
  • Professional Engineer registration is preferred
  • Broad technical expertise or specialized knowledge
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with team members and project managers
  • Experience with floodplain mapping and FEMA floodplain regulations and standards
  • Experience modeling stormwater hydrology and hydraulics
  • Experience permitting and designing stormwater and drainage infrastructure
  • Experience with watershed assessment and planning
  • Experience with flood protection and resilience
  • Experience with low-impact development and green infrastructure
  • Experience developing project scopes and fee proposals
  • Knowledge of construction principles, surveying, inspection, engineering methods and materials, and surveying techniques
  • Working knowledge of HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, XPSWMM, PCSWMM, WSPGW, InfoWorks ICM, ESRI GIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office
  • Successful completion of a post-offer pre-employment background check compliant with NIST 800-171
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States and ability to provide required hiring documentation
  • Ability to travel across unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment during some site visits
