Underwriting Assistant - New York City (Hybrid)

Support Canopius Group’s specialty insurance underwriting operations in a hybrid New York City role. Manage submissions, policy servicing, premium processing, broker coordination, and related underwriting administration.

Description

  • Support the underwriting process across the full policy lifecycle
  • Assist underwriters with acquiring and retaining business
  • Coordinate with brokers to gather information, meet servicing needs, and resolve issues
  • Work with Canopius teams to address data, servicing, and cash flow matters
  • Review new business submissions and follow up on missing broker information
  • Initiate sanctions checks and refer potential hits to underwriters
  • Triage new and renewal submissions against underwriting rules and guidelines
  • Prepare quote letters and binder documentation
  • Complete catastrophe modelling when required
  • Process transactions in the policy administration system
  • Collect surplus lines producer licensing details for non-admitted business
  • Maintain complete and accurate electronic underwriting records
  • Issue policies and reinsurance certificates when applicable
  • Gather renewal and loss information
  • Prepare premium invoices and assist with collections and discrepancy resolution
  • Issue endorsements and process cancellations
  • Follow up with brokers regarding outstanding subjectivities
  • Assist with ceded facultative reinsurance administration
  • Process broker of record transactions
  • Ensure policies meet SLA issuance deadlines and are booked before monthly close
  • Contribute to system testing, enhancements, and assigned projects

Requirements

  • Highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting
  • Comfortable working independently and under pressure within a small team
  • Strong critical thinking ability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Careful attention to detail with a consistent focus on accuracy and quality
  • Able to work and learn with urgency
  • Proven problem-solving ability
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, and Teams
  • Basic understanding of financial statements or willingness to develop this knowledge
  • Previous insurance experience is required
