Staff Platform Engineer at Focus — Remote in the United States

Build internal platforms, test automation, and cloud infrastructure for Focus’s civic-tech government programs. Improve delivery safety, reliability, observability, and compliance across complex systems.

Description

  • Design and govern internal platforms that improve delivery speed, deployment safety, and operational reliability
  • Lead observability, automated CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and compliance automation initiatives
  • Reduce operational effort and standardize environments across vendors and integrated business applications
  • Build and maintain scalable end-to-end UI and API test suites with Playwright and TypeScript
  • Create Python and REST API tools for automated data generation and synthetic applicant profiles
  • Develop React and TypeScript tools for test scenario creation and pipeline monitoring
  • Optimize CI/CD pipelines with quality gates and feature-based promotion workflows
  • Create reusable engineering patterns, self-service platform features, CLI tools, and starter kits
  • Review code and mentor engineers through regular one-on-one guidance
  • Act as a technical liaison for client leads and external vendor teams
  • Support cloud infrastructure changes with Terraform
  • Integrate security scanning and manage continuous compliance in FedRAMP and Public Trust environments
  • Collaborate on systems serving tens of millions of American students and borrowers

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of professional experience building full-stack applications and tooling with TypeScript and Python
  • Hands-on experience creating and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform
  • Experience designing complex systems that integrate external services, databases, and third-party APIs
  • Experience working within cross-functional Agile teams
  • Ability to estimate complex engineering work
  • Experience presenting technical updates directly to client stakeholders
  • Strong diagnostic ability for complex failures in distributed, multi-vendor microservices applications
  • Previous experience with federal government digital services or civic-tech programs
  • Familiarity with AWS GovCloud
  • Familiarity with FedRAMP compliance standards
  • Familiarity with observability tools
  • Experience building synthetic test data generators or sophisticated mock data services for enterprise integrations
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States
  • Ability to satisfy additional government contract requirements
  • Work authorization that will not require visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • Willingness to undergo a government background check or security clearance if required
  • Residence in the continental United States
