Staff Backend Software Engineer, Core (Hybrid)
Lead backend architecture and platform reliability for Everand, Scribd’s digital reading and listening products. Guide distributed systems, personalization, experimentation, and technical modernization across the engineering organization.
Description
- Define technical direction for Everand’s backend through architecture reviews and design documentation
- Turn unclear product goals into practical backend solutions
- Manage platform reliability across staging, CI/CD, databases, queues, costs, and observability
- Strengthen engineering practices through code reviews, mentoring, pairing, testing, design, and operations
- Represent the backend team in cross-functional planning and execution
- Develop scalable, resilient, and observable services
- Modernize legacy platforms and reduce technical debt
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Analytics, Web, Mobile, and ML engineering teams
- Create backend capabilities that support experimentation and consistent cross-platform data
- Analyze metrics and telemetry to detect trends, investigate anomalies, and inform decisions
- Advocate for user-centered reading and listening experiences
Requirements
- Extensive professional experience in backend engineering
- A strong record of designing and scaling distributed systems
- Ability to produce clean, maintainable, and secure code in a modern backend language such as Ruby, Scala, Go, or Python
- A consistent focus on reliability and observability
- Experience defining SLOs, building metrics and alerts, and troubleshooting distributed systems
- Demonstrated technical leadership in architecture, engineering mentorship, and large-scale migration or modernization programs
- Ability to work effectively with senior Product, Design, and ML stakeholders
- Experience participating in architecture review forums and technical design discussions
- Strong Ruby development skills are advantageous
- Experience improving reliability, latency, or throughput in large-scale distributed systems is advantageous
- Experience partnering with ML teams on recommendation or feed systems is advantageous
- Familiarity with experimentation or feature-flagging platforms is advantageous
- Residence in or near an eligible Scribd employment location
- Authorization to work in the country where the role is based
