Description

  • Build and deploy backend services and event-driven pipelines for messaging, notifications, location, and subscriptions.
  • Improve the reliability, speed, and delivery rates of high-volume messaging and notification systems.
  • Connect and maintain third-party platforms, including Braze, Amazon Pinpoint, Apple and Google push services, and app store billing.
  • Take features from planning and design through development, launch, measurement, and iteration.
  • Turn complex engineering challenges into manageable tasks and deliver them on schedule.
  • Work with Product, Design, Data Science, Marketing, and iOS, Android, and web engineering teams.
  • Support A/B tests and use their results to guide release decisions.
  • Review code and uphold sound engineering practices, testing, and edge-case coverage.
  • Guide and mentor junior colleagues, new hires, and interns.
  • Build shared components, utilities, and services that help the team work more efficiently.
  • Maintain and improve runbooks, alerts, and monitoring.
  • Take part in a reasonable on-call rotation.
  • Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code and Gemini to improve development speed and code quality.
  • Develop expertise in messaging, notifications and campaigns, location, or subscriptions and promotions.

Requirements

  • At least two years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Ability to take multiple features through delivery, including breaking engineering problems into manageable tasks.
  • Strong Java programming skills.
  • Working knowledge of microservices and distributed systems fundamentals.
  • Good understanding of data structures and object-oriented design.
  • Working knowledge of asynchronous, event-driven systems, including queues, pub/sub or streams, retries, and idempotent processing.
  • Practical experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code or similar in an engineering workflow.
  • Follow sound coding practices, write appropriate tests, weigh trade-offs, and account for edge cases.
  • Comfort giving and receiving feedback in code reviews.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Helpful but not required: Fluency in another modern object-oriented programming language.
  • Helpful but not required: TypeScript and Node.js experience.
  • Helpful but not required: Agile development experience.
  • Helpful but not required: REST API experience.
  • Helpful but not required: AWS experience, including DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, Lambda, and ElastiCache (Redis).
  • Helpful but not required: Experience with notification and engagement platforms such as Braze, Amazon Pinpoint, APNs, and FCM, or in-app subscription billing.
  • Helpful but not required: Apache Flink or Kafka Streams experience.
  • Helpful but not required: Experience with A/B testing platforms and analytics warehouses.
  • Helpful but not required: Experience with LLM-based APIs such as Bedrock, Vertex AI, or OpenAI.
  • Helpful but not required: Experience with Kubernetes, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines.
