Senior Staff Software Engineer, Pricing and Packaging — Gusto (Hybrid)

Lead technical strategy for Gusto’s Commerce Platform, covering pricing, packaging, subscriptions, promotions, and entitlements. Shape systems that support more than 500,000 small businesses.

Description

  • Set the technical architecture for Gusto’s Commerce Platform, including catalog, promotions, subscriptions, and entitlements
  • Work with product leaders and engineering partners to establish the roadmap and expand platform adoption
  • Lead complex initiatives from requirements and technical planning through implementation, launch, and continuous improvement
  • Develop engineers through design and code reviews, mentorship, and practical technical guidance
  • Use AI-enabled development tools, automated tests, and data-informed diagnostics to improve delivery speed
  • Strengthen observability, reliability, and performance by managing SLOs, coordinating incident response, and facilitating blameless post-incident reviews
  • Partner with marketing and business stakeholders to enhance self-service management of products, bundles, promotions, and discounts

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Two or more years as a technical lead or staff engineer responsible for setting team direction
  • Advanced proficiency in at least one language, such as Ruby, Java, Python, or Go
  • Extensive experience building and running large-scale backend platforms, preferably involving commerce, billing, subscriptions, pricing, or packaging
  • Strong expertise in distributed systems, API architecture, and service reliability
  • Experience establishing and achieving production SLOs
  • Proven ability to use AI development tools, including GitHub Copilot or Claude Code
  • Track record of leading technical programs across engineering, product, and business teams
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
