Senior Embedded Engineer, VxWorks and DO-178C – Avenga, UK Remote

Avenga is seeking a senior embedded engineer to develop C, VxWorks, BSP, and device-driver software for custom hardware. The role supports DO-178C DAL A certification projects for engineering clients.

Description

  • Create, implement, and validate embedded software for custom and commercial off-the-shelf hardware.
  • Build Board Support Packages for embedded hardware platforms.
  • Design, implement, and test peripheral-device drivers.
  • Develop hardware test code and assist with hardware bring-up, integration, and validation.
  • Develop and maintain embedded software in line with DO-178C requirements.
  • Contribute to software activities for projects pursuing DAL A certification.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex embedded software and hardware issues.
  • Produce software design documentation and technical plans.
  • Assist with technical planning, effort estimation, and assessment of required technical capabilities.
  • Work with embedded software engineers, project managers, customer engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Explain technical information to engineering teams and customers.
  • Mentor junior engineers and share technical knowledge.
  • Support customer projects and work at customer sites when required.
  • Work independently, take ownership of assigned technical tasks, and deliver them on schedule.

Requirements

  • At least seven years of software development experience, including five or more years developing to DO-178C.
  • Strong embedded software background, especially in low-level BSP and device-driver development.
  • Advanced C programming skills.
  • Practical experience with VxWorks and/or Linux.
  • Thorough knowledge of DO-178C, especially DAL A certification, plus familiarity with related standards.
  • Experience developing, debugging, and troubleshooting embedded software for custom and commercial off-the-shelf hardware.
  • Familiarity with embedded development environments such as Wind River Workbench or Eclipse.
  • Experience bringing up and validating custom embedded hardware.
  • Experience with PowerPC, MIPS, x86, or ARM processor architectures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with customers and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Self-directed, proactive, and comfortable working independently.
  • Sound decision-making and professional judgment.
  • Willingness to mentor and support junior engineers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent practical experience.
