Senior Database Engineer (Remote, India)

Lead the operation and reliability of 1Kosmos’s production database environment supporting passwordless identity security. Manage migrations, performance, recovery, access controls, observability, and incident response across a diverse AWS data stack.

Description

  • Manage daily operations for MongoDB, Amazon DocumentDB, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Amazon Redshift, covering health checks, capacity, connections, and storage growth
  • Coordinate database version upgrades by evaluating driver compatibility, deprecated functionality, and query changes against application code
  • Diagnose and resolve slow queries through workload profiling and explain-plan analysis, including index creation, tuning, and retirement
  • Execute schema and data migrations before releases with documented checks, validation, and tested rollback procedures
  • Maintain Git-based, version-controlled database migrations through pull requests and GitHub Actions CI
  • Process approved customer data requests, including exports, reports, corrections, and deletions, while maintaining audit trails
  • Administer Redshift reporting access for Iceberg tables in S3, including external schemas, Spectrum, Glue Data Catalog, views, grants, and query optimization
  • Manage backups, point-in-time recovery, and failover, and regularly rehearse and document restoration procedures
  • Administer database users, roles, grants, secret rotation, and access reviews for SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliance audits
  • Develop and refine monitoring and alerting for query latency, replication lag, disk usage, connections, and cost
  • Respond to database incidents, lead root-cause investigations, and deliver corrective fixes
  • Automate recurring database administration tasks with Python or Bash
  • Partner with Development, Customer Success, ML, and DevSecOps on releases, installations, and customer escalations
  • Take part in the on-call rotation

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • At least five years of experience administering production databases
  • Production experience with MongoDB or Amazon DocumentDB, including replica sets, indexing, TTL, and upgrades
  • Production experience managing PostgreSQL
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with Amazon Redshift or a comparable analytical query engine such as Athena, Trino, Snowflake, or BigQuery
  • Demonstrated experience planning production database upgrades and evaluating application impact beforehand
  • Experience designing indexes and tuning queries using profiler data and explain-plan output
  • Experience delivering schema and data migrations within a release process
  • Production experience with backup, restoration, and replication, including tested recovery procedures
  • Strong knowledge of AWS database and supporting services, including RDS or Aurora, DocumentDB, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, Secrets Manager, and CloudWatch
  • Proficiency in Python or Bash for automation
  • Experience with Git and CI-driven change management
  • Experience handling PII and customer data under SOC 2, GDPR, or comparable requirements
  • Consistent practice of validating changes and documenting runbooks
  • Availability to participate in an on-call rotation
  • Based remotely in India
