Senior Cloud Engineer, Azure SQL
UBDS is seeking a senior cloud engineer to modernise SQL Server and Azure SQL platforms through cloud transformation programmes. The role covers database migrations, optimisation and secure platform engineering.
Description
- Assess existing SQL Server environments and their readiness for migration.
- Map database dependencies, integrations, data flows and migration constraints.
- Plan and deliver SQL Server and Azure SQL migrations, including schema and data transfers.
- Validate and reconcile data to confirm migration outcomes.
- Diagnose and improve database performance, availability and reliability.
- Stabilise databases, remediate issues and deliver post-migration improvements.
- Provide database platform engineering across cloud migration workstreams.
- Support database automation and Infrastructure as Code work.
- Connect database deployment and migration work to Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
- Coordinate with application, infrastructure and architecture teams to resolve technical dependencies.
- Prepare technical documentation, migration plans, risk assessments and improvement recommendations.
- Identify technical debt and contribute to database modernisation and ongoing improvement.
- Work in structured agile delivery settings, supporting governance and technical assurance.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL.
- A track record delivering complex database migrations to Microsoft Azure.
- Strong SQL development skills, including T-SQL, stored procedures, queries and database objects.
- Experience in database discovery, assessment and dependency analysis.
- Experience planning and carrying out end-to-end database migrations.
- A solid grasp of database schema and data migration, including validation.
- Experience tuning and optimising database performance and troubleshooting issues.
- Understanding of database architecture, security, permissions and data integrity.
- Experience supporting production database platforms and resolving complex technical issues.
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments.
- Understanding of Infrastructure as Code and database automation methods.
- Experience working on structured migration or transformation programmes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and stakeholder communication skills.
- Current Security Check (SC) clearance before starting, with the ability to maintain the required clearance throughout the assignment.
